摘要： Microfabricated therapeutic actuators are fabricated using a shape memory polymer (SMP), a polyurethane based material that undergoes a phase transformation at a specified temperature (Tg). At a temperature above temperature Tg material is soft and can be easily reshaped into another configuration. As the temperature is lowered below temperature Tg the new shape is fixed and locked in as along as the material stays below temperature Tg. Upon reheating the material to a temperature above Tg, the material will return to its original shape. By the use of such SMP material, SMP micro-tubing can be used as a release actuator for the delivery of embolic coils (11) through catheters (10) into aneurysms, for example. The micro-tubing (10) can be manufactured in various sizes and the phase change temperature Tg is determinate for an intended temperature target and intended use.

摘要： Electromechanical microstructures (70) (microgrippers), either integrated circuit (IC) silicon-based or precision machined, to extend and improve the application of catheter-based interventional therapies for the repair of aneurysms in the brain or other interventional clinical therapies. These micromechanisms can be specifically applied to release platinum coils or other materials into bulging portions of the blood vessels also known as aneurysms. The 'micro' size of the release mechanism is necessary since the brain vessels are the smallest in the body. Through a catheter more than one meter long, the micromechanism located at one end of the catheter can be manipulated from the other end thereof. The microgripper (micromechanism) of the invention will also find applications in non-medical areas where a remotely actuated microgripper or similar actuator would be useful or where micro-assembling is needed.

摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an embolic coil detachment system in regard to a system and a method for delivering an embolic coil to a treatment region in a patient's vasculature.SOLUTION: An embolic coil detachment system includes a slender flexible polymer tube having a tubular wall with an inner wall surface defining a lumen. A distal portion of the tubular wall has a cut line, and a resistive heating element is located near the cut line and brought into direct contact with a surface of the distal portion of the tubular wall, to directly heat a distal portion of the flexible polymer tube adjacent to the cut line. A therapeutic embolic coil includes a headpiece which is releasably attached inside the distal portion of the flexible polymer tube, and the headpiece can be released by heating the distal portion of the tubular shaft to separate the distal portion of the tubular wall along the cut line.
