A method of continuously measuring the degree of baking of a self-baking electrode includes the step of measuring the voltage drop between a metal member 8, passing through both the unbaked, electrode-forming paste 2 and the baked mass 5 of carbon, and the peripheral metallic shell 1. The metal bar 8 is consumed with the carbon mass during operation of a furnace utilizing the electrode, e.g. a submerged arc furnace for producing metals or alloys. A three-phase furnace for producing calcium carbide is referred to. Contacts 6 and conductors 7 connect the electrode to an external circuit. Insulated and shielded conductors 10, 11 connect member 8 and shell 1 to a double moving element recording resistometer 9, for measuring the voltage drop, and conductors 12, 13, convey a measurement of the electrode current supplied, so that the resistometer 9 records the ratio C between these two quantities, as an indication of baking. Member 8 is connected via insulating tension rods to the reinforcing structure of the electrode (not shown). A detailed example is given, specifying dimensions and operating conditions.

    • High molecular weight stereoregular polymers containing the repeating unit (-CH2-CH2-CH=CH-CH2-) are made by a process which comprises polymerizing cyclopentene in the presence of a catalyst obtained by mixing a transition metal salt of Groups IVb or VIb of the Periodic Table according to Mendel aeeff with a metallorganic compound or metal hydride of Groups Ia, II or III. In the examples polymers with the cis configuration are formed with aluminium compounds and either molybdenum or molybdenyl pentachloride or with tungsten hexachloride and beryllium diethyl. Otherwise systems composed of an organo-aluminium compound and one of molybdenum dichloride triphenoxide, molybdenum pentafluoride monochloride, tungsten hexachloride, zirconium tetrachloride or titanium tetrachloride produce the trans form. In Examples (12) and (13), a catalyst system comprising aluminium triethyl and either titanium tetrachloride or a mixture of alumi nium trichloride and titanium trichloride produces a mixture of polyethylene and polycyclopentene. A catalyst of tungsten hexafluoride and lithium n-butyl gives a mixture of cis and trans forms. The polymers are sulphur vulcanizable. Specification 995,186 is referred to.

    • Polymerization catalysts, particularly catalysts for the polymerization of olefins, are disclosed. The catalysts are prepared by mixing hydrides of organometallic compounds of metals belonging to Groups I to III of the Mendelyeev Periodic Table with products obtained by contacting (1) titanium compounds of the formula MpTimX(n. m) +p in which M is an alkaline metal or the group NR4 in which the valences of the quaternary nitrogen atom are satisfied by hydrogen and/or by hydrocarbon groups or is part of a heterocyclic ring; Xn. m substituents are NR2 group in which the Rs represent hydrogen, and/or hydrocarbon groups or, in part, halogen atoms; n is the titanium valence; m is a whole number from 1 to 3 inclusive; and p is zero or a whole number from 1 to 3, inclusive; with (2) carriers consisting of anhydrous Mg halides which are in active form or converted to active form by the conditions under which the carriers are contacted with the titanium compounds. The catalysts are particularly effective in the polymerization of ethylene and the copolymerization thereof with higher alpha-olefins and/or diolefins.
