    • A remote copy technique according to which data of a primary volume is migrated while continuing remote copy processing and receiving access requests from a host. A remote copy system comprises a first storage system having a first primary volume, a second storage system having a second primary volume and a third storage system having a secondary volume, and remote copying is performed between the first primary volume and the second volume. When data in the first primary volume is migrated to the second primary volume, an access request from the host to the primary volume is transferred to the second primary volume. Further, the second storage system stores write data received from the host and data of the first primary volume received from the storage system, into the second primary volume. Out of data stored in the second primary volume, the second storage system sends data determined by management information received from the first storage system, to the third storage system.

    • In a storage subsystem, performance tuning is performed with respect to whole logical devices including external storage subsystems that are not directly connected to host computers.Physical storage units presented by the external storage subsystems are defined as logical devices of the storage subsystem itself, and I/O processing requests from the host computers are relayed to those logical devices. At the time of relaying, I/O processing conditions are monitored. When there exists an external storage subsystem whose load is high, then, operating conditions of ports and processors are examined. In the case where the load can be reduced by changing the configuration of those ports and processors, the configuration is changed to reduce the load. In the case where the load can not be reduced, data is migrated from a logical device having a high load to a logical device having a sufficient performance.

    • System availability is improved in a second storage system, connected to a first storage system, and having means for virtualizing devices within the first storage system as its own devices. When the virtual storage system or a storage management server detects a fault in the virtual storage system, the management server investigates the range affected by the fault, identifies a device for which measures must be taken, determines a transfer target device which accommodates the performance, reliability, and other attributes of the affected device, and issues a device transfer instruction for the virtual storage system. In the virtual storage system, the data of the device specified by the instruction within the virtual storage system is transferred to a device, specified by the management server, within the system itself, or to a device within another virtual storage system.
