    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for reducing crosstalk in a telecommunication system. Broadly, the present invention utilizes a common mode signal to obtain additional information that can be used to better approximate the transmitted signal (by approximating and canceling crosstalk or otherwise). In accordance with one embodiment of the invention, a modem is provided having improved crosstalk cancellation circuitry for canceling crosstalk received on a local loop (or otherwise estimating the remotely transmitted signal) carrying modem communications. The modem includes a first input for receiving a signal carried on the local loop and a second input for receiving a signal obtained from the common mode. The modem further includes processing circuitry configured to either reduce crosstalk present in the signal carried on the local loop, or to otherwise closely approximate the remotely transmitted signal. Using both the first and second signals allows the processing circuitry of the modem to obtain more accurate results.

    • The present invention is directed to implementing theoretical foundations of frequency domain methods aiming to locally decrease the impact of aggregate side lobes of a few discrete frequency tones, in the vicinity of other “victim” frequencies. The family of frequency methods referred to makes use of one or more “canceller tones.” The “canceller tones” loads are optimized to minimize the aggregate power in the neighborhood of the victim frequencies. An exemplary method for decreasing an impact of aggregate side lobes of one or more discrete frequency tones in the vicinity of one or more victim tones comprises the steps of calculating an aggregate power of one or more side lobes of one or more disturber tones within a victim bandwidth; determining at least one optimal load to minimize the aggregate power wherein the at least one optimal load comprises a linear combination of the one or more disturber tones; and applying the at least one optimal load to one or more canceller tones for minimizing the impact of the one or more side lobes of the one or more disturber tones.

    • A multiple access method for use in a point to multipoint communications network includes a step of allocating a respective unique variable (&rgr;1, . . . , &rgr;i, . . . , &rgr;n) to each respective network terminal of this communications network, a first all-pass filtering operation on at least one oversampled symbol which is derived from upstream information to be transmitted by a terminal (T1;Ti) to a central station (CS) of said communications network, a next step of filtering a received oversampled symbol stream at said central station (CS) for enabling said central station to discriminate therefrom said at least one oversampled symbol that was earlier transmitted by said network terminal (T1;Ti) to said central station (CS), said all-pass filtering operation having a z-transform transfer function ({overscore (c)}i(z)) such that the zeroes thereof correspond to said respective unique variables assigned to all other network terminals, except the unique variable (&rgr;1;&rgr;i) assigned to said network terminal (T1;Ti), whereby said next step of filtering consists of performing the z-transform on said received oversampled symbol stream, and of evaluating said z-transform at the unique variable (&rgr;1;&rgr;i) assigned to said network terminal (T1;Ti). A transmitter and receiver for performing this method are as well disclosed.
