    • 1,136,608. Producing aluminium by fused electrolyte process. CONZINC RIOTINTO OF AUSTRALIA Ltd. and COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION. Dec.30, 1965 [Dec. 30, 1964], No. 55306/ 65. Heading C7B. Aluminium metal or alloy is produced by (1) electrolyzing a fused salt electrolyte containing at least one alkali, alkaline earth and/or rare earth metal halide e.g. LiCl and NaCl, and a chloride of a metallic reductant e. g. MgCl 2 , CaCl 2 and/or LiCl, using a molten alloy cathode of the metallic reductant, e. g. Mg, Ca and/or Li, and Al metal or alloy, the metallic reductant, being electro-deposited from the electrolyte to enter into solution in the molten alloy, and (2) contacting the molten alloy with AlCl 3 , preferably in a separate reactor compartment. AlCl 3 vapour under pressure may be bubbled through the molten alloy, e.g. via two concentric tubes projecting downwardly with the inner tube supplying AlCl 3 vapour to a lower level than the outer tube; or the molten alloy may be made to flow over a cascade to react with the AlCl 3 vapour in the reactor compartment. Molten Al metal or alloy containing a diminished concentration of reductant may be recycled from the reactor compartment back to the electrolysis compartment and a portion discharged. For producing alloys, the chloride of the alloying element is introduced with the AlCl 3

    • PCT No. PCT/AU90/00489 Sec. 371 Date Jun. 17, 1992 Sec. 102(e) Date Jun. 17, 1992 PCT Filed Oct. 12, 1990 PCT Pub. No. WO92/08329 PCT Pub. Date May 14, 1992.An ultrasonic transducer has a pair of transducer elements (30,31), polarised in opposite directions, which are mounted between, and in intimate contact with, respective front face electrodes (32) and back face electrodes (33). The front face electrodes are each earthed. The back face electrodes are each connected to a respective input/output terminal (34,35). The input/output terminals are supplied with activating pulses of opposite polarity, produced using a differential pulse generator (39) or a transformer arrangement (43), when the transducer is operating in the transmit mode. When the transducer is operating in the receive mode, pulses of opposite polarity are generated at the back face electrodes when an ultrasonic pressure wave is incident upon the front face electrodes. These pulses are differentially summed using a differential amplifier (40) or a transformer arrangement (43). Impedance matching is preferably used to optimise performance. Such a transducer has a substantially reduced pick-up of environmental noise and thus has an improved signal to noise ratio when in use.

    • The vacuum pump (10) includes two pairs of piston and cylinder assemblies (21, 22, 23, 24) mounted on opposite sides of a crankshaft (13) in a common plane with the gas inlets for the first and second cylinders of a first pair of piston and cylinder assemblies (21, 22) being connected to the device to be evacuated and the gas outlets thereof being connected to a common outlet (17) having a spring biased one-way valve controlling the outlet and to a passage connected to the inlet of a third cylinder in said second pair of piston and cylinder assemblies (23, 24). The gas outlet of the third cylinder (23) is connected to the inlet of the fourth cylinder (24) and the gas outlet of the fourth cylinder is connected to the common outlet through spring biased one-way valves. Each cylinder is provided with a cylinder head having a pair of one-way valves controlling inlet and outlet ports wherein the one-way valve controlling the gas inlet port acts as a torque reduction valve to reduce the amount of torque necessary to move the piston away from the cylinder head on the initial stroke of the piston. Each cylinder is provided with a liner in the form of a sleeve having an hard wear resistant oxide coating thereon and each piston is provided with a coating of filled polytetrafluorethylene for the purpose of reducing friction.
