[Class 80 (ii)] In mechanism whereby a shaft 1 can be driven by either of two driving means, the shaft carries two sleeves 9, 11, the sleeve 9, integral with a hand wheel 7, being loose on the shaft and restrained against axial movement to the right by a thrust bearing 14, while the sleeve 11 is slidably keyed on the shaft and has a flange 5 urged to the right by a spring 6 towards frictional or positive engagement with an irreversible worm-wheel 3 driven by a hand- or power-operated worm 2. The adjacent end faces of the sleeves are formed with obtuse-angled teeth 10, 10 , separated by balls 12. Thus, when the wheel 7 is turned, upon stoppage of the worm 2, the clutch 3, 5 is disengaged, but engages again when the rotation of the wheel 7 ceases. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the bearing 14 may be adjustable. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.

[Class 80 (ii).] In reversing-gearing for road rollers or other vehicles, a pair of coaxial friction clutches 7, 8 giving forward and reverse drives respectively are controlled by pivoted levers 3, 4 pivotally connected at their free ends to sleeves 13 adjustably secured on a cross-rod 10. The bifurcated end of one arm 23 of a bell-crank lever, pivoted at 22, straddles a central collar 18 on the rod and engages sliding abutments 24 of adjustable springs 19. The other arm 23 of the bell-crank is connected by a link 23b to a pivoted hand lever 25 which is shiftable through a gate 26 having end notches for the forward and reverse positions and a central notch for the neutral position. In neutral position, both clutches are free. When the lever 25 is moved to one of its end positions, the rod 10 is caused to move axially in the appropriate direction through one of the springs 19, the abutment 24 of the other spring being held against the collar 18.
