Water-tube boilers; water circulation, apparatus for promoting; feedwater, supplying and controlling; steam and water drums.-A circulating pump for a steam generator is placed between the tubes and steam drum and driven proportionately to the rate of steam generation. Other generator auxiliaries may be similarly driven. The generator comprises six coils of tubes 1, the inlet ends 3 being attached to a pump housing 6, the supply pipe 23 coupling the housing with the water space of the steam drum 22. Steam generated in the tubes 1 passes to a header 17, thence by a pipe 18 to the pump engine unit 10, and lastly by the pipe 21 to the steam drum. The circulating pumps are therefore driven at a rate proportionate to the steam generated. An economiser 26 with feed inlet 27 is placed in the upper part of the enclosed firebox 34. The combustible mixture is supplied by a fan 32 to a rose burner 2 and the products of combustion are led away at 38.

    • 243,923. Mansel, R. S. Jan. 22, 1925. Water circulation, auxiliary apparatus for promoting; partitions in water space.- An artificial head of water or supply of water under pressure at the inlet ends of the down headers of a watertube boiler is produced by fitting rotary impellers or other circulator devices in the steam drum in conjunction with partitions extending across the drum. A rotary impeller g, Fig. 1, in a compartment e formed in the steam drum c by partitions d produce a head of water over the inlet to the down header b. The partitions have apertures fitted with valves k opening in the direction of the natural circulation of the water. The upper part of the compartment c is in communication with the main steam space of the drum. The circulator device may be arranged outside the drum and connected to the drum by inlet and outlet pipes. The outlet pipe may terminate in nozzles so coacting with orifices in the diaphragm as to induce a circulation through the orifices. The impeller g, Fig. 2, and diaphragm d are so arranged as to direct the water downwardly into the down header b. To increase the circulation through the lower tubes of the boiler, the inlet ends of the upper tubes may be provided with baffles or deflectors which deflect the water circulating down the headers towards the lower tubes, or nozzles may be arranged opposite the ends of the lower tubes for directing jets of water into the tubes.
