    • A machine for inspecting the heal code of a bottle. The bottle is supported vertically at an inspection location and a camera having an imaging area is located vertically beneath the bottle. A light source directs a beam of light downwardly through the bottle and an iris for limits the beam to light which pass through the opening of the supported bottle and will illuminate the bottom of the supported bottle outwardly to the heal code of the bottle. A cylindrical mirror is supported coaxial to the axis of the bottle between the bottom of the bottle and the camera for reflecting an annular beam of light containing the heal code towards the camera, and a transparent plate having a black center prevents light within the annular beam of light from reaching the camera.

    • Apparatus for inspecting transparent containers having sidewall portions of differing optical properties that includes a pair of discrete light sources for directing light energy through the adjacent essentially discrete portions of the containers having the differing optical properties. A camera receives light energy directed through the container from both of the light sources as a single image of the entire portion of the container illuminated by both light sources. Commercial variations are detected as a function of variations in light intensity at the camera. The camera includes an array sensor that receives light energy transmitted through both of the container portions, and is scanned at increments of container rotation so as to develop an electronic image of the entire portion of the container illuminated by the light sources. The light sources are coordinated with the imaging electronics such that the electronic image has uniform optical properties in all portions of the image in the absence of commercial variations at the container.

    • A method of and an apparatus for inspecting a bottle or the like by which the presence or absence of a defect, particularly a check, can be determined with a high degree of accuracy. Light is irradiated upon an inspection area of a rotating or moving object, and reflected light is photographed by a two-dimensional camera which includes solid-state image pickup elements. Picture element data for a first frame are fetched at a first point of time from the two-dimensional camera and stored into a memory, and then picture element data for a second frame are fetched at a second point of time after a fixed interval of time after the first point of time. Then, differences of the picture element data for the second frame from the picture element data for the first frame from the memory are taken and binary digitized with reference to predetermined brightness threshold level, and the differences which have one of two binary values are counted. The count number is compared with a predetermined number to determine the presence or absence of a defect in the object being inspected.
