    • A method and an apparatus for controlling an internal combustion engine are provided to determine the location of evaluation interval for knocking detection according to the difference between the reference fire propagation angle and the actual fire propagation angle. A method for controlling an internal combustion engine comprises a step of determining a reference fire propagation angle to maximize the efficiency of the internal combustion engine, a step of determining an actual fire propagation angle to operate the internal combustion engine at the actual operating point, a step of detecting a signal to induce an outcome based on the occurrence of knocking in the combustion chamber of the internal combustion engine from a sensor(14), and a step of determining the location of a knocking evaluation interval according to the difference between the reference and the actual fire propagation angle.
