    • This invention pertains to an article that emits infrared radiating for a period of about 15 minutes or more, depending on the size and shape, and to a process for preparing the article. The article includes, in a preferred embodiment, a combustible aerogel or other nanocellular substrate with iron metal impregnant formed by thermal decomposition of iron pentacarbonyl deposited on and in the substrate in an amount of at least about 5 % or at least about 20 % of the weight of the substrate, depending on the substrate. The impregnant reacts exothermically on contact with air or an oxygen-containing gas and imparts sufficient energy to the substrate to cause it to burn for about 30 seconds to about 30 minutes depending on size and shape, thereby emitting infrared radiation. The process pertains to deposition of the impregnant on and in the substrate by flowing a carrier gas saturated with the impregnant precursor over and through the substrate. Liquid impregnant precursors can be transported to the substrate by bubbling a carrier gas through the precursor. Solid impregnant precursors can be thermally volatilized and similarly deposited on and in the substrate. Soluble impregnants, or their precursors, can be deposited on the internal and external surfaces of the substrate by diffusing the precursor solution into the pores and distilling off the solvent under inert atmosphere, leaving the pyrophoric impregnant in and on the substrate surfaces.

    • A candle with a firework which is constructed such that a firework (1) is mounted to a candle (4) in such a manner to permit a firework (1b) to be ignited and permit combustion of the firework (1b) to extend and spread to a wick (2b), thus permitting the candle with a firework to continue combustion as a conventional candle. The candle with a firework gives off less ash and smoke during combustion of the firework, can be safely used and is constructed to positively ignite the candle (4). Wound around the rod-shaped firework (1) comprising gunpowder containing as a combustible material a soft resin adapted to soften at a temperature of about 50 in the centigrade scale is the wick (2) of the candle (4) to provide the present candle with a firework, which is used in candle service in the wedding ceremony and in an event such as a party at home or the like to arouse an atmosphere there.

    • Compositions are provided which, when burned, produce significant levels of infrared radiation, but only limited levels of visible radiation. The basic components of the compositions include a binder, an oxidizer, and a fuel, where the binder also acts as the fuel. Preferred oxidizers include those compounds which produce large quantities of infrared radiation when the flare composition is burned. Such oxidizers include potassium nitrate, cesium nitrate, rubidium nitrate, and combinations of these compounds. Selection of the binder is important in order to provide the composition with the desirable characteristics identified above. The binder of the present invention does not produce significant soot. At the same time, the binder serves to form a composition which is processible, avoids chunking, and is compatible with the oxidizers used. It has been found that polymer binders which include relatively short carbon chains (1-6 continuous carbon atoms) are preferred. Examples of such polymers include polyesters, polyethers, polyamides and polyamines.
