    • An inflator (10) for inflating an air bag (12) includes an outer housing (40). A hermetically sealed canister (90) containing disks (110) of gas generating material is located in the outer housing (40). The canister (90) also contains an annular auto ignition packet (150) containing an auto ignition material (164) having an ignition temperature below the ignition temperature of gas generating material in disks (110). The auto ignition packet (150) extends around a base (138) of an igniter (99). The auto ignition packet (150) is disposed adjacent to a lower end wall (46) of the inflator housing (10) opposite from an end wall across which the folded air bag extends. Consequently, the air bag does not insulate the auto ignition packet (150) from the interior of the vehicle in which the inflator is disposed.

    • A gas generator for vehicle occupant restraint systems comprises an elongated housing having gas outlet openings, a sealed, rupturable gas generant cartridge positioned within the housing, and pyrotechnic gas generant contained in the cartridge in the form of a plurality of wafers having openings defining a central passage. An igniter capsule mounted at one end of the housing has an exit opening juxtaposed the sealed gas generant cartridge and the central passage of the gas generant therein. The igniter capsule contains ignitor material, and an initiator and initiator charge. The initiator ignites the ignitor material which expels a fireball of hot combustion products from the capsules exit opening, rupturing the sealed cartridge and igniting the gas generant charge to produce gas for inflating an air bag. A rupturable seal is provided over the exit opening of the ignitor capsule and a nozzle directs hot combustion products to the gas generant cartridge. The initiator charge is auto ignitor material for operating the gas generator if it is exposed to fire. The ignitor capsule comprises overlapping metal parts, and is mounted as a closure of the elongated housing. The gas generant cartridge is placed in the housing surrounded by filtering and cooling screens. One end of the rupturable gas generant cartridge adjacent the ignitor capsule outlet is scored for rupturing inwardly to admit the ignitor fireball. The cartridge contains wraps of filter screen to provide structural rigidity, and additional filter and cooling materials surround the cartridge.

    • An air bag inflator (10) includes a housing (12) open at one end. Inflator parts including gas generating material (70) are disposed in the housing (12). A retainer assembly (138) in the housing has a first part (170) expanded outwardly into interlocking engagement with a part (30) of the housing wall (14) adjacent the opening (24). This blocks movement of the retainer assembly (138) relative to the housing (12) toward the open end (24) of the housing (12). An end cap (90) is screwed into the open end (24) of the housing (12) after the retainer (140) is positioned in and interlocked with the housing (12). The retainer (140) is disposed intermediate the end cap (90) and the gas generating material (70). Because retainer (140) is disposed between the gas generating material (70) and a body of auto ignition material (122) in the end cap (90), a nozzle ( 150) is formed in the retainer (140) to direct auto ignition combustion products toward the gas generating material (70).

    • A gas generation device for a vehicular passenger protecting system. The gas generation device is equipped with an auto ignition device that is ignitable at a predetermined temperature when the gas generator is heated from an external source. Thus a primary ignition agent having an ignition temperature lower than the ignition temperature of a secondary ignition agent ignites first, causing a pressure rise which in turn moves a sealing member. In one embodiment, the sealing member breaks a gas-tight container which causes the ignition of the secondary igniton agent, which in turn causes ignition of a gas generating agent. In a second embodiment, the sealing member causes ignition of the gas generating agent directly. In either case, the primary ignition agent ignites prior to sufficient loss in mechanical strength of the gas generation casing body housing the gas-tight container.

In fabricating the inflator, the filter assembly is simply lowered into position within the diffuser and the propellant is lowered into the filter cavity. Subsequently, the closure member is mated to the open end of the diffuser and the lip of the diffuser is magnaformed over the outer edge of the closure in the area where they overlap to form a structural seal.

In one embodiment, the ignition apparatus comprises a thermally-conductive member and a beat-activated auto-ignition material (25, 125, 225) thermally coupled to the thermally conductive member. Sympathetic ignition of the second gas generant composition (17, 117) is produced by ignition of the auto-ignition material (25, 125, 225) resulting from heat from combustion of the first combustible material (16, 116) communicated along the thermally-conductive member (40a, 140a, 240a).
