    • Novel devices which can be used to both collect blood samples from and administer medical fluids to a patient on a repeated and continual basis using one rather than multiple needle insertions. The device typically includes a main tubing segment confluently connected to a cannula for insertion in the patient's vein. A syringe port and a volumeter for collecting blood branch separately from the main tubing segment. The device is used to collect blood by attaching an empty blood collection syringe to the syringe port, inserting the cannula in the patient's vein, allowing passive flow of blood from the main tubing segment into the volumeter under intrinsic venous blood pressure and capillary action, and then facilitating active flow of blood from the volumeter into the blood collection syringe by extending the syringe plunger. The device may be used to administer medical fluids to the patient through the main tubing segment from a medical fluid syringe or catheter attached to the syringe port.

    • A color-coded slide clamp for controlling the flow of fluid or other substance through an I.V. delivery tube. Each slide clamp generally comprises two longitudinal sides connected at one point by a resilient transverse end. At an opposing end, the longitudinal sides include crimping surfaces, which are clamped around the flexible delivery tube to regulate the flow of fluid passing there through. The precise width of the longitudinal sides determines the rate of flow of the fluid that may pass through the delivery tube. The wider the sides are, the lower rate of fluid that may pass through the tube. The width of the sides is fixed at the time of manufacture to correspond to a single, steady flow rate. The flow rate of the clamps can be easily identified by a color coding scheme. Alternately, clamps can be color-coded for easy identification of the type of fluids passing through the tubes.

    • A clamp apparatus for selectively occluding a resilient tube to prevent free flow of fluid in the tube. The device comprises a base member to which the resilient IV tube is attached or through which it passes, and a slide clamp that slides relative to the base member and relative to the tube. The aperture in the slide clamp has a relatively open hole at one end, through which the tube passes when the slide clamp is an open position, allowing fluid to flow through the tube. The aperture also has a relatively constricted slot at the other end, through which the tube passes when the slide clamp is in the occluding position, preventing fluid flow through the tube. A deflectable cantilevered locking arm on the base interlocks with a detent on the slide clamp to lock the slide clamp at the occluding position to avoid inadvertent free flow. A release tab that is used to release the locking arm from the slide clamp is located off center to avoid inadvertent activation. The deflectable arm is unstressed when the slide clamp is in either the occluding or the open positions. A stop device prevents over-stressing the release tab when it is moved. In one embodiment, the clamp apparatus may be slid along the IV tube to a desired location.

    • A slide clamp includes a slot formed in a plate though which a fluid tube is mounted. The tube may be moved to a flow section of the slot or to an occluding section of the slot. Interconnecting the flow and occluding sections is a pinch zone in which the slot is narrower than the occluding section. Because of this narrow slot, the pinch zone resists movement of the tube from either the occluding or the flow sections into another section. The pinch zone includes a pair of curved beams that are formed as a result of apertures formed in the plate at locations laterally outward from the slot of the pinch zone. As a tube is forced from the occluding section to the flow section the curved beams flex outwardly permitting the tube to pass. However, if enough force is not applied to the tube, it will not overcome the curved beams and they will stop movement of the tube. After the tube has passed, the curved beams resiliently return to their rest position once again providing a stop. The beams are symmetrically shaped and will permit movement of the tube in either direction. The apertures also provide identification markers for the slide clamp.
