    • The absence of MPEG processing in a consumer digital recorder player may preclude on-screen message display of recorder status. Various methods are disclosed which facilitate the on-screen display of recorder player status meassages. A first embodiment returns a reproduced decoded, analog video signal (102) to the digital recorder player (200) for insertion of status messages. In a further embodiment recorder message data (221) is coupled to the digital signal decoder (100, 117, 520) for inclusion with the decoded analog video signal (102). In another embodiment a recorder message command (TAG/CMD) is coupled to the decoder (100, 510) to access recorder specific graphical messages. In yet a further embodiment, recorder message data (221) is tagged and coupled to the decoder (100, 510) to select recorder specific graphical messages if available or to display recorder (200) message data. In yet another embodiment, digital or analog operating mode determines recorder message display position and timing.

    • An inventive method provides various reproduction modes by controlled selection of replay locations. Selection within a video stream or between separate video streams derived for selected trick-play speeds may be facilitated. The method allows selections to be decoded and displayed independently of previously video stream selections. The method comprises the steps of: identifying (step 200) a digitally encoded set of signals (NP, TP1, -TP1, TP2, -TP2) in a storage medium (10) for each one of a plurality of video programs (P1, P2, P+n) for reproduction of each one of said plurality of programs at a plurality of reproduction speeds; reproducing one of the encoded signals (NP, TP1, -TP1, TP2, -TP2) from the store (10) responsive to a program selection and a reproduction speed; calculating an address (step 375) for initiating reproduction of a different one of the encoded signals (NP, TP1, -TP1, TP2, -TP2) responsive to a new reproduction speed; reproducing (step 600) the different one of the encoded signals (NP, -TP1, TP2, -TP2) from the address in the store (10); and, decoding the reproduced signals for display of the selected program at the selected new reproduction speed.

    • A television receiver includes a graphics generator (800) for generating for display a stylized image (105; 205; 305) of the environment in which the user's physical television receiver is situated. The image includes graphical representations of functions which are available for selection and control by a user, and at least one (135) of which functions affect the display of the video image. In one embodiment of the invention, a video inset-image from a PIP unit is completely surrounded by a graphics image. The PIP image is aligned with the screen (111; 211) of a graphically displayed television receiver (110; 210) to portray an image of a television displaying a received television program. Alternatively, an animated graphics presentation is displayed in the screen area (311) of the graphically-displayed television receiver to simulate live video. In another embodiment, a stylized display of the user's room is altered in response to user input regarding the user's consumer electronics equipment, and submenu operational choices are enabled or disabled accordingly.

    • In accordance with the present invention, a method of electrophotographically manufacturing a luminescent screen assembly on an interior surface of a faceplate panel (12) of a color CRT (10) comprises the steps of coating the interior surface of the panel with a volatilizable, organic conductive material to form an organic conductive (OC) layer (32), and overcoating the OC layer with a volatilizable, photoconductive material to form an organic photoconductive (OPC) layer (34). Then, a substantially uniform voltage is established on the OPC layer, and selected areas of the OPC layer are exposed to visible light to affect the voltage thereon, without affecting the voltage on the unexposed area of the OPC layer. Next, triboelectrically charged, light-absorbing screen structure material is deposited onto the unexposed area of the OPC layer to form a substantially continuous matrix (23) of light-absorbing material having open areas therein. The present method is an improvement over prior methods in that the present method includes the additional steps of forming a planarizing layer (35, 135) on the OPC layer; overcoating the planarizing layer with a second coating of the volatilizable, organic conductive material to form a second OC layer (132), and then overcoating the second OC layer with a second coating of the volatilizable, organic photoconductive material to form a second OPC layer (134). The phosphor materials are deposited onto a suitable charged and exposed second OPC layer so that the phosphors completely overlie the openings in the matrix and overlap at least a portion of the matrix adjacent to the openings.
