The server (101) prepares a communication having presence information corresponding to a status of the communication devices in the group; determines network infrastructure device(s) serving the group; and transmits, at a pre-determined time, the communication to the network infrastructure device(s). A network infrastructure device (103a-c, 105a-f) receives the communication and transmits, as a common channel signal during the pre-determined time, a signal with the presence information. A communication unit (107a, 107b, 107c) receives an indication of the pre-determined time; transmits, at an interval proximate to the pre-determined time, a signal indicating the communication device's status; and receives, at the pre-determined time, the signal with the presence information.

    • A security method (100) in a radio access network can include monitoring (102) (by either a base station controller or a mobile radio) for one or more abnormalities among CPU utilization, memory storage, memory read-write, malicious incoming or outgoing messages, and virus file names, notifying (104) of a specific abnormality detected, and receiving (108) access, conditional access or limited access based on the specific abnormality detected. The method can further include receiving updates (112) used for monitoring the abnormalities. The method can further include the optional step (106) of issuing a notification from a mobile radio to a base station controller if the specific abnormality is detected and suspending (110) one or more services based on the specific abnormality detected. The method can further include receiving (114) at the mobile radio an over the air programming instruction to suspend a specific service and alerting the mobile radio.

    • Various embodiments are described for establishing a group call session serially. After receiving a serial group call request from a remote unit (101), fixed network equipment (FNE) (201) selects a first subset of members (260) from the targeted group (250) of units and signals those members to join the group call session. Various techniques for selecting the first subset may be employed depending on what system benefits are desired. A second subset of members (270) from the targeted group of units is also selected and signaled to join the session. This second subset may be used to invite additional units in order to achieve a maximum number of group participants. Alternatively, the second subset may be used to invite a different unit (or units) to participate. This can be triggered by a user request to invite another subset to the group session, as could occur when the user is not able to resolve the particular matter at-hand with the group members of the first subset.

    • A call management system (136) and method that allows a first wireless voice call to be temporarily disconnected at a mobile device (130) while another communications session is performed from the same device (130). During a first voice call between a wireless communications device (130) and a second party, a network hold command is received. The second party is then placed on hold and wireless communications resources for the first wireless call are released. The wireless communications device (130) is subsequently reconnected to the second party. The reconnection includes removing the second party from hold and connecting the second party to the second voice call. A unit identifier (240) identifying the wireless communications device (130) is stored in an infrastructure database (114) along with an identifier of the first voice call to facilitate reconnection. Prior to reconnection, a wireless data communications session can be performed.
