    • A joint detector that improves the performance of receiving a downlink control channel signal for a near-end mobile terminal in the presence of a stronger control channel signal addressed to a far-end mobile terminal sharing the same OVSF, or channelization, code through the use of orthogonal signature sequences. Depending on the specific embodiment, the joint detector may produce the desired bits for the control signal of interest, or may produce detected bits for all control signals sharing the same OVSF code. The joint detector despreads and combines the received code-multiplexed signal, utilizing knowledge of the cross correlations of the set of signature sequences and time-varying channel coefficients to alleviate performance degradation caused by interference from other signals. In various embodiments, the joint detector may be implemented as a modified decorrelating detector, a modified MMSE detector, a modified LS estimator detector, a successive interference-canceling detector, or a jointly hypothesized detector.

    • A method and apparatus use unified equations to provide computationally efficient but exact solutions to bit soft value computations for Gray-coded QAM symbols in a received communication symbol as compared to carrying out region-specific equations that are keyed to particular regions of a nominal modulation constellation. Such unified equations further may include one or more correction terms that compensate the bit soft value computations for the effects on symbol samples of more than one “nearest” neighbor in the nominal modulation constellation. While the computations offer particular advantages for receivers making use of the HS-DSCHs used in WCDMA, the method and apparatus can be used in essentially any wireless receiver or system employing Gray-coded QAM.

    • A delayed decision feedback Log-MAP equalizer generates optimal soft information at the bit level for MPSK and MDPSK modulations over multipath fading channels. The algorithms have a forward-backward recursion structure similar to conventional Log-MAP algorithms. To reduce complexity, the forward recursion incorporates the techniques of delayed decision feedback sequence estimation to construct a reduced state space. The backward recursion then takes this state space as given, in that it does not hypothesize feedbacks, and computes required soft information.
