    • A Chromatographic Pattern Analysis System (CPAS) (100) determines chromatographic variability due to a plurality of sources without requiring identification or characterization of peaks or other chromatographic features, receives data indicative of a standard chromatogram and a first sample chromatogram generated from a first mixture by a High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) device (102) and data indicative of a plurality of additional sample chromatograms generated by the HPLC device (102) from a plurality of different mixtures. The CPAS (100) generates from the standard chromatogram a plurality of sets of chromatographic variability data, each set being indicative of a different effect of the chromatographic variability of the HPLC. The standard chromatogram is modified as a function of the variability data, and a residual value, indicative of a difference between the modified standard chromatograms and the first sample chromatogram is generated. Residual values are generated for the additional sample chromatograms and are used to determine differences between the corresponding mixtures and the first mixture.

    • A thermal measurement apparatus and method for performing heat flux differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is disclosed. A variable thermal resistor is used to couple a measurement assembly to a heat sink in the thermal measurement apparatus, such that samples can be rapidly heated and rapidly cooled. The apparatus can be configured with a highly conductive sample assembly enclosure. The enclosure can include a high emissivity coating. In one embodiment, the enclosure extends along a longitudinal direction that is about the same as that of an infrared lamp assembly used to heat the enclosure, thereby increasing the efficiency of heating the sample enclosure. In one configuration, the variable thermal resistor comprises a gap whose gas composition can be varied during a sample measurement to independently optimize sample heating and cooling rates.

    • A device for chromatographically separating compounds held in a fluid sample. The device comprises a tube means having an inlet aperture for receiving a fluid sample, an outlet aperture and an internal wall. The internal wall defines a passage for receiving a monolithic separation medium. The passage has a first end and a second end, spaced from each other along a length, and a plurality of cross-sectional areas along the length. The inlet aperture is at the first end and the outlet aperture at the second end. A monolithic separation medium is positioned in said passage. Each of the cross-sectional areas of the passage decreases with each cross sectional area in a continuous or stepwise manner between the first end and the second end, such that a flow of a fluid sample through the passage from the inlet aperture to the outlet aperture pushes the monolithic separation medium against the internal wall.
