A toe-iron for safety ski-bindings is characterised in that it can be swivelled about a vertical axis lying in the area of the heel, out of its normal position until it reaches either of two release positions without longitudinal movement, and does not release the foot until this angular position has been overstepped whereby the resistance of the spring is transmitted through at least one lever and an abutting member of the toeiron, which slides upon an edge of the lever when swivelling occurs, the lever and the spring being so constructed that when the swivelling occurs, the increase in the resisttance of the spring is approximately compensated for by the elongation of the lever arm between the lever fulcrum and the bearing point of the abutting member. In an embodiment, a long base plate 5 is arranged to rotate about a round plate 6, which is securely mounted on the ski 19 and lies in the region of the heel, the sole holder 7 being securely fastened to the base plate 5. A restoring mechanism comprises a cam plate 10 with a cam 24 which is held in its initial position by spring 15, and the roller 18 is supported in the pivot bearing 16, the pivots 11 and 12 being located in the end position of their associated guide slots 22 and 23. When the base plate is swivelled cam plate 10 will rotate about one of the pins 11 and 12 and the roller 9 will ride upon cam 24. The plate 5 can swivel freely about point 6 after release from the restoring mechanism. The member 8, in which roller 9 is supported, may be swivelled vertically about an axis 20 so that base plate 5 may be easily reintroduced into the restoring mechanism. Other embodiments are described in which (a) torsion springs are employed as the restoring element, whose free ends collaborate in each case with an abutting member of the toeiron and a fixed stop on the ski, and the sole holder member is pivotably supported on the swivelling plate and locked so that it cannot swivel until it reaches the predetermined angular position; and (b) bellcrank levers are employed as the restoring element, preferably pivotable about a common fulcrum, and which collaborate with one pressure or tension spring each and whose free lever arms lie around and bear upon the abutting member of the toe-iron.

    • A connection between the ski and the skiing boot is provided for by a separate soleplate. A plate-holding device engages the soleplate behind the heel of the boot. An abutment for the soleplate is mounted on the ski. The plate-holding device normally urges the soleplate against the abutment and releases the same in response to an overload acting in a vertical and/or horizontal direction. The abutment consists of a lever, which is pivoted to the ski on an axis which is transverse to the longitudinal direction of the ski. Said lever has a free end portion extending toward the rear end of the ski. A disc is provided on the underside of the soleplate and is adapted to be approximately coaxial to the tibia of the skier and bears on the free end portion of the lever. At least two bearing blocks are secured to the ski below the soleplate and support the soleplate before and behind the disc. The plate-holding device comprises a known, spring-loaded detent member, which engages a wedge-shaped notch at the rear end of the soleplate. The apex of said notch is rearwardly and downwardly inclined.

    • A soleholder member constitutes a coupling link of a four-bar linkage, which is movable from its normal position against the force of a spring and which comprises levers that are pivoted to a carrying plate which constitutes or is pivoted to a baseplate to be secured to the ski. One of the pivot pins which connect the coupling link to the levers and which in the normal position of the toe iron are symmetrically disposed with respect to the longitudinal center line of the toe iron carries an arm which is capable of a limited pivotal movement and which in the normal position of the toe iron assumes an end position in which the free end of said arm overlaps and in one point disposed on the longitudinal center line of the toe iron contacts the free end of another arm, which is connected to the lever that carries the other pivot pin. The spring is held at one end on the carrying plate or on the coupling link and at its other end engages the first-mentioned arm. This arm is provided with a series of spring-connecting means, which are selectively connectable to the spring and which do not influence the initial stress of the spring.

    • The toe iron comprises a pivoted member, which is rotatable against the force of at least one spring about a pivot pin, which is at right angles to the surface of the ski and which is held on a baseplate secured to the ski. The pivoted member carries a soleholder member, which is also rotatable about a pivot pin which is at right angles to the surface of the ski and when the toe iron is in normal position the soleholder member is engaged on both sides of the longitudinal center line of the toe iron. The soleholder member bears on the pivoted member and by means of another pivot pin and a pivoted lever is linked to the pivoted member. The pivoted lever consists of a two-armed lever and that arm which does not carry the soleholder member is formed with a slot, by which the lever is mounted for rotation and for a sliding movement in the longitudinal direction of the lever in a vertical pivot pin, which is also held on the baseplate, all pivot pins lie on the longitudinal center line of the toe iron when the latter is in its normal position, and the maximum distance between the two pivot pins for the pivoted lever is less than the distance between the two pivot pins secured to the baseplate.
