    • An apparatus for exercising the ankle, comprising a base frame, a seat support section attached to the base frame, and a seat adjustably mounted to the seat support section. The apparatus includes a foot carriage assembly comprising a foot carriage frame pivotally attached to the base frame for enabling plantar and dorsiflexion of the foot, a support arm pivotally attached to the foot carriage frame for enabling inversion and eversion of the foot, and a foot platform pivotally attached to the support arm for enabling abduction and adduction of the foot. A resistance system is operably connected to the foot carriage assembly for providing resistance against a force applied by a patient during use. The resistance system further comprises at least one weight stack, including a longitudinal weight rest and at least one guide rod attached to the base frame and extending through the longitudinal weight rest to enable the weight stack to maintain a vertical alignment with the base frame during use, and a complex pulley system operably attached to the foot carriage assembly for enabling the at least one weight stack to be raised and lowered in response to movement of the foot carriage assembly. The pulley system further comprises an abduction/adduction pulley system, a plantar/dorsiflexion pulley system, and an inversion/eversion pulley system.

    • A method and apparatus for preparing a planar surface on the distal femur prior to implantation of a femoral knee prosthesis has a femoral plate with an opening therein for exposing both condyles of the femur. A guide with a central aperture is used to align the femoral plate on the distal femur. The guide is releasably secured to the femoral plate and an intramedullary guide rod is placed through the aperture therein and into the intramedullary canal of the femur. After alignment with the intramedullary canal, the femoral plate is pinned to the femur and the rod and guide are removed. A milling guide having two bores, one adjacent each condyle, is then placed on the femoral plate and an end mill is used to mill a planar surface on at least one of the condyles.

    • A modular femoral internal implant system for use in the treatment of femoral disorders resulting from injury, disease or congenital defect includes at least three interconnectable components: 1) an elongated epiphyseal/metaphyseal implant, 2) an intramedullary rod and 3) an angled side plate having an elongated plate portion adapted to be secured to the outer cortical wall and a hollow sleeve adapted to extend into the femur.     • An acetabular cup for use as a prosthetic implant has an insert with a body including a central bore for receiving a positioning rod therein. A key element is formed on the bore and is adapted to align the positioning rod. The insert has a locating element formed on an outer surface of the body and also includes spring elements extending radially outwardly from the body. The acetabular cup has a generally hemispherical shell member coupled to the outer surface of the insert. The shell has an outer surface for engaging the acetabulum and an inner surface having a circumferential groove for receiving the spring elements. The spring elements may be deflected radially inwardly out of engagement with the groove for releasing the insert from the shell. The shell has a plurality of apertures extending from its inner to its outer surface, which apertures are located in an asymmetrical pattern about the shell. The shell includes a recess on its open end for receiving the locating element on the insert to align the insert at a predetermined orientation with respect to the apertures in the shell. The engagement of the insert onto the shell and the engagement of the locating element in the recess aligns the key element on the central bore and, therefore, the positioning rod at a predetermined orientation with respect to the apertures in the shell.

    • The bone prosthesis of the present invention comprises a first body member or stem for placement into a bone cavity, such as an intramedullary canal. The body member is configured and dimensioned so as to provide a nonuniform interference press-fit. The apparatus further comprises a second body member or broach for placement into and removal from a bone cavity, the broach configured and dimensioned so as to prepare the bone cavity so as to provide a nonuniform interference press-fit with the stem. The apparatus further comprises a distal sleeve configured and dimensioned so as to be attached to the stem so as to centralize the stem in the bone cavity. The distal sleeve preferably is provided with an interior conical slope and an exterior conical slope on a portion thereof to aid in insertion into the canal. The stem further comprises at least one groove and preferably a plurality of grooves along its corners. These grooves are nonparallel to the longitudinal axis of the stem and do not extend over any one entire side of the stem. The stem can be provided with an area of cancellous texture which comprises substantially randomly patterned array of multiple curved-line surface unevenness, such as indentations or protrusions. The present invention also is directed to a method comprising utilization of the broach, the stem and the distal sleeve so as to provide a nonuniform press-fit between the bone prosthesis and the bone cavity while centralizing the stem in the bone cavity.
