摘要： An improved system for identifying the user of postal equipment. A user provides identifying information (S1), and if access is not appropriate based on that information, an additional comparison is performed before access is denied (S7). This permits the user to select the identifying information (S4) needed for access from a set of predefined information, thereby permitting the user to change identifying information needed for access in the event the information has been or is suspected of having been compromised. Additional security may also be obtained by requiring the user to supply additional identifying information randomly selected from a predetermined set after valid first identifying information has been entered. Identifying information supplied by the user may include personal digital data, such as a digital fingerprint or retina eye scan.

摘要： In a mailpiece stacking system, a pressure pad is used to direct incoming mailpieces from a mailing machine used with the system onto a feed deck, where the mailpieces are stacked against a stacking wall in the system. To properly handle mailpieces including window envelopes, the length of the pressure pad is selected in accordance with the invention such that it effectively deflects each mailpiece to land beyond the window part of any window envelope preceding thereto on the feed deck. Advantageously, the risk of having the mailpiece getting caught by an edge of the window part, resulting in a congestion, is avoided. In addition, among other things, a catch nub is included in the pressure pad for hooking onto a stub shaft mounted on the frame of the system. The nub hooks onto the stub shaft when the pressure pad is raised to allow it to stay in the raised position. Moreover, to effectively attach the stacking system to the mailing machine, the stacking system provides thereunder a hook having a C-shaped opening. The hook is used to be slidably engaged with a support knob underneath the mailing machine through the opening. The resulting engagement aligns the mailing machine with the stacking system to allow proper feeding of the mailpieces from the mailing machine to the stacking system, notwithstanding the vibrations occasioned by the operation of the mailing machine and the stacking system.

摘要： A payment system includes a label device (103), and a postal security device (PSD) (130) which stores postal funds for dispensing that may be replenished via electronic funds transfer. For example, the payment system performs functions other than just dispensing postal funds such dispensing lottery tickets. In the case of dispensing postal funds, the label device (103) is programmed to generate indicia (400) onto label stock (403) which serves as proof of postage after deducting the corresponding postage amount to be dispensed from the postal funds stored in the PSD (130). In the case of dispensing lottery tickets, the label device (103) is programmed to connect to a lottery server over a communications network and to transmit transaction data concerning the selected lottery numbers (1207), payment for the lottery entry, etc. to the lottery server. Accordingly, the payment system deducts t he payment amount corresponding to the lottery entry from the postal funds stor ed in the PSD (130). In return the payment system receives, from the lottery server, data concerning indicium (1300). Label device (103) then uses the received data to print indicium (1300) on label stock (1303), thereby producing a lottery ticket.

摘要： In accordance with the invention, a postal security device (PSD) (10) contains a non-volatile memory (13) which does not depend on battery power such as an EEPROM (13), and contains a nonvolatile memory (14, 16) which does depend on battery power, such as a static RAM. The PSD (10) also contains an encryption engine (12, 14, 22). An encryption key is developed and is stored in the static RAM (14), which is sized to be only large enough to contain the encryption key. A large body of data, too large to fit in the static RAM, is encrypted by means of the encryption engine (12, 14, 22) and with reference to the encryption key, and is stored in the EEPROM (13). This body of data typically includes cryptographic keys and sensitive bit-images. When the PSD is powered, a large RAM (typically a dynamic RAM) (16) is available to receive the large body of data, decrypted using the encryption key. A tamper switch (17) cuts power to both RAMs (14, 16) in the event of tampering.
