    • A downhole tool that includes a cutter and jacking system and methods of using such a tool to remove a portion of casing or tubing from a wellbore. The tool may include an upper slip and a lower slip configured to selectively engage casing of a wellbore. A cutter and an extendable section may be positioned between the upper and lower slips. The cutter may be used to cut casing into an upper portion and a lower portion and the extendable section may be used to increase a distance between the upper and lower slips that moves the upper portion of the casing and the lower portion of the casing away from each other. The extendable section may be hydraulically actuated to move the upper portion of the casing away from the lower portion of the casing. The cutter may be an abrasive jet configured to cut the casing.

When cable load exceeds a preset limit, the shear pins shear allowing the slidable cutting segments to be moved up the slidable cutting segment guides to impact and shear the cable.

Preferably each external conduit is run through a cutter housing that is integral with a passage having threaded end connections. The cutter knife assembly chambers or channels can be in banks that are axially spaced using bypass channels to access lower banks. The cutter knife assembly and associated channels can be mirror images so that the external conduits can be cut regardless of where the tubing string is severed and one or more conduits can be cut with a single cutter assembly.

    • A pipe string in an oil well has a cable (2) slidingly attached along it. It may be necessary to break the pipe string. Apparatus is provided for controlling the position of a fracture in the cable, as it is desirable to break the cable at about the same point. The apparatus comprises a pocket (1) attached to the cable and having a passage through which the cable passes, and upper and lower nipples (5 and 6) attached to the cable in the pocket. The lower face (5') of the nipple (5) is skewed relative to the lower internal face (3') of the pocket and the facing faces (5", 6') of the two nipples are skewed relative to each other, so bending and kinking the cable when tension is applied. The cable therefore breaks at the bend or kink. The pipe string includes a plurality of such apparatuses located at spaced points along its length.
