    • A method and apparatus for forming and stacking laminations that are used in an electro-magnetic device such as a motor or transformer is disclosed. The method steps and apparatus used provides the incremental forming of a predetermined number of laminations from magnetically conductive material with each lamination having at least one coil winding segment of predetermined incrementally varying width. Each coil winding segment is formed by the movement of forming elements such as punching or stamping dies or laser devices and the magnetically conductive material relative to one another. Following formation of the laminations with the aforementioned coil winding segments of predetermined incrementally varying width, the laminations, with the formed coil winding segments, are stacked to provide a combined generally circular outer cross sectional winding area about which a predetermined length of conductive wire can be positioned, either directly around the cross sectional winding area about a bobbin wound with the electrically conductive wire, or about a split bobbin first assembled over the winding area and then subsequently wound with electrically conductive wire. When the forming elements are moved relative to the magnetically conductive material, the forming elements can be moved in any direction in any predetermined linear and/or curvilinear path, depending on the laminations produced. For the manufacture of certain electro-magnetic devices, in lieu of moving the forming elements relative to the magnetically conductive material, the magnetically conductive material can be moved relative to the forming elements.

    • A shaded pole motor includes a squirrel-cage rotor and a stator assembly. The stator assembly having a bore for rotatably receiving the rotor and pole separation parts on an inner circumference of the bore so that adjacent separated portions are excited alternately to an N-pole and an S-pole when a winding is energized. The inner circumference of the bore is divided into plural sections represented by 2(2n+1). The magnetically divided two pole portions have pole sections having an alternating N-pole and S-pole, and non-pole sections, when a winding of the stator is energized.

    • A shaded pole electric motor has a stator and a rotor interacting through an air gap. This stator has a salient pole with a narrow neck and wide pole shoe. A shading coil slot extends into the salient pole from the air gap and defines a shaded portion of the pole. The exposed side of the shaded portion is relatively smooth, as established by the shading coil having one side in the shading coil slot and another side in a shading pole aperture close to but spaced from the exposed side. This establishes ease of insulating the surface of the salient pole to receive a stator winding. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

    • Salient-pole shaded pole motors with multiple short circuited shading coils on each pole piece are disclosed wherein the pole pieces extend generally radially from the geometric center of the magnetizable yoke. The pole pieces are interconnected by a magnetic yoke that encompasses the pole pieces as well as a rotor. Adjacent pole tips of pole pieces are displaced in space from one another and are separated by air gaps. Among other things, this facilitates placement of concentrated winding means about the pole pieces. The leading edges or pole tips of the pole pieces exhibit a relatively high reluctance as compared to the center portion or region of the pole pieces. Also disclosed are methods of making multiple shading coil motors. Preferred forms include parallel disposed pairs of shading coils on each trailing pole tip which facilitates manufacture of motors. In addition, all of the coils are preferably made to be the same size in cross section to further facilitate manufacturability. The size of the shading coils are selected in terms of the total cross sectional area of the maximum size concentrated winding for a given pole.

    • A synchronized induction motor, designed to drive a turntable of a record player, has a stator with two pole pairs spaced 90.degree. apart and a rotor with a short-circuited cylindrical body inductively entrainable by the alternating stator field. The rotor body is provided at one end with a magnetic ring peripherally subdivided into eight magnet poles spaced 45.degree. apart, these poles coacting with an armature on the stator forming two pole shoes jointly magnetizable with one stator pole pair, in line therewith, and two pairs of pole shoes jointly magnetizable with the other stator pole pair, disposed midway between the stator poles. The inductive torque exerted upon the rotor with a 50% lag of the rotor is insufficient to cause further acceleration whereby the rotor is driven synchronously by the coacting pole shoes and magnet poles.
