    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a combustion chamber structure of a diesel engine which simultaneously reduces the generation of NOx and smoke through realization of rich and lean burn without using a high-cost additional device, such as a CCD(Combustion Chamber for Disturbance system). SOLUTION: A combustion chamber 3 is formed in a recessed state in a piston top surface 2, and a collision member 5 is provided to collide and diffuse fuel F injected through a fuel injection nozzle 4 in the combustion chamber 3. An air chamber 11 to contain air is arranged in the internal part of a piston 1 below a combustion chamber 3, and a communication passage 13 to intercommunicate the air chamber 11 and the combustion chamber 3 is provided. Since the air chamber 11 not only stores air for lean combustion at a later stage but also is functioned as a dead volume to reduce the combustion chamber 3, a need for an annular groove formed as a dead volume in a conventional piston top surface 2 is eliminated, and swirls S are all confined to the combustion chamber 3. Thus, during rich combustion at an initial stage, the generation of a smoke component is suppressed, and a lightly generating smoke component is re-burnt by an air flow Y from an air chamber 11 to be combustion chamber 3 during lean combustion at a later stage.
