[Also in Division C3] Flame retardant compounds for incorporation in polymeric materials are encapsulated in microcapsules of diameter 5 to 5000 microns by spray drying dispersions of the flame retardant compounds in solutions coating materials. Specified flame retardants are tri-(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate, chlorinated paraffins, dibromoethane, 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane, pentabromodiphenyl ether and tri-(chloroethyl) phosphate. The coating material may be a dextrin or gelatine derivative, polymer or copolymer of styrene, acrylamide/t-butyl acrylamide copolymer, styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, gum arabic or mixture thereof with gelatine. The preparation of a microencapsulated flame retardant by dispersing tri-(2,3-dibromopropyl)- phosphate in an aqueous solution of carboxylated dextrin and spray-drying at 80-85‹ C. to give microcapsules of diameter 20 microns is described.

    • 1,254,461. Polish compositions. ROHM & HAAS CO. 26 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 56101/68. Heading C3P. Aqueous polish compositions contain a filmforming polymer and a chelate compound which comprises (a) a polyvalent metal or polyvalent metal ammonium moiety and (b) a bidentate amino acid ligand moiety. The polymer component is preferably an emulsion polymer of one or more (meth)acrylate esters, optionally copolymerized with monomers such as (meth)- acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, styrene, vinyl toluene, vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride; other optional monomer components include carboxylic acid monomers, amine monomers and partial esters of dicarboxylio acid monomers. Preferred chelate compounds are cadmium, nickel, zinc and zirconium glycinates, cobalt, copper and zinc alaninates, copper, zirconium and zinc #-alaninates, nickel norvalinate, zinc valinate, zinc N-methylamino acetate, copper dimethylamino acetate and ammonium complexes of these compounds. The compositions may additionally include other components such as waxes, alkali-soluble resins, surfactants, dyes, pigments, fillers and plasticizers (e.g. tributoxyethyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate, diethylene glycol monoethyl ether, diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol). Waxes, where used, may be of vegetable, animal, synthetic (e.g. polyethylene) and/or mineral origin (many examples are given). Suitable alkali-soluble resins include shellac, Manilla gum, Loba gum, styrene-acrylic acid resins, styrene-maleic anhydride resins, alkali-soluble alkyds and rosinmaleic anhydride or rosin-fumaric acid adducts modified with polyols.
