    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refining method for efficiently and industrially advantageously obtaining a high-purity 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxocarbazole compound useful as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals from a reaction liquid containing the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxocarbazole compound, zinc chloride and acetic acid.
      SOLUTION: The refining method for efficiently and industrially advantageously obtaining the high-purity 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxocarbazole compound comprises the following process: The reaction liquid containing the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxocarbazole compound, obtained by reaction of a 1,3-cyclohexanedione monophenylhydrazone compound in the presence of zinc chloride and acetic acid, is mixed with an alcohol and/or ketone to deposit the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-oxocarbazole compound in crystal form.
