    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process and an apparatus for friction welding capable of correctly controlling an upset length in friction welding.
      SOLUTION: The friction welding process comprises: steps of (a) providing first and second work pieces to be welded together; (b) imparting motion relative to the second work piece to the first work piece thereby imparting kinetic energy relative to the second work piece to the first work piece ; (c) applying a predetermined force to move one or both of the first and second work pieces towards the other to create an upset length in the work pieces; (d) measuring the rate of motion of the first work piece relative to the second work piece; (e) determining a predicted final upset length from the measured rate of relative motion; (f) comparing the predicted final upset length with a desired final upset length; and (g) adjusting the aforesaid kinetic energy to achieve substantially the desired final upset length.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a welding wire package of a lifting strap configuration which cannot be easily removed until a welding wire is consumed.
      SOLUTION: The package for containing a wire coil having an outer cylindrical circumferential surface extending around the coil axis, an upper portion and an opposing bottom portion, has a base part to support the bottom portion of the wire coil when the wire coil is in the package. At least one side wall is extended upwardly from the base part around the outer cylindrical circumferential surface of the wire coil, and has an upper edge to form an upper opening part in the package in order to remove the wire. The package further includes a hold-down bar between the bottom part of the wire coil and the base part across the axis of the wire coil, a first end, a second end, and a lift strap having a base part between the first end and the second end, and between the bottom part of the wire and the base part. The base part has an opening part, and the hold-down bar extends through the opening part.
