    • An apparatus including a slip control device for controlling an amount of slip of a lock-up clutch disposed between pump and turbine impellers in a power transmission system of a motor vehicle, a slip-parameter monitoring device for detecting the actual slip speed of the lock-up clutch or a control error between actual and target slip speeds of the lock-up clutch, a summing device for obtaining a sum of values of the actual slip speed or control error detected by the slip-parameter monitoring device for a predetermined period of time, and a defect detecting device for determining the presence or absence of a defect in slip control of the lock-up clutch by the slip control device, on the basis of the sum as compared with a predetermined reference. The slip-parameter monitoring device and summing device may be respectively replaced by a speed-parameter monitoring device for detecting a speed-related parameter which varies due to hunting in slip control of the lock-up clutch by the slip control device, and a smoothing device for smoothing the speed-related parameter. In this case, the hunting detecting device determines the presence or absence of the hunting defect on the basis of a difference of the speed-related parameter from its smoothed value.

    • In response to a signal indicating the present throttle valve opening degree detected by a throttle valve sensor and a signal indicating the present vehicle speed detected by a vehicle speed sensor, a lock-up controller determines whether a lock-up clutch should be brought into the operatively connected state or it should be released from the operatively connected state, and on completion of the foregoing determination, the controller outputs a certain signal to a solenoid valve. In the case that the lock-up clutch has been released, this state is maintained. On the contrary, in the case that the lock-up clutch has been in the operatively connected state, the controller determines whether maintains this state or selects a lock-up clutch releasing pattern depending on the present throttle valve opening degree. Specifically, the controller selects a pattern in such a manner that the operative connecting force of the lock-up clutch is quickly reduced at the time of coasting of a vehicle, it is slowly reduced at the time of an intermediate throttle valve opening degree, and it is appreciably slowly reduced at the time of a large throttle valve opening degree. With such control, a driver does not unpleasantly feel a stifling shock at the time of coasting, and moreover, acceleration behavior of the vehicle is enhanced at the time of a large throttle valve opening degree.

    • The torque capacity of a torque converter clutch is controlled with a two-state directional valve and a single solenoid operated pressure control valve. In operation, the directional valve is spring biased to a release state in which converter feed pressure is directed to a passage between the clutch plate and the converter input shell to release the clutch and feed the converter. The return fluid from the opposite (apply side) of the clutch is routed through the directional valve to a low pressure fluid cooler. A control pressure generated by the solenoid operated valve develops a hydraulic bias which opposes the spring bias. When the hydraulic bias is sufficiently great, the directional valve shifts to a control state in which the solenoid operated valve controls the pressure supplied to either the apply or release side of the clutch to control its torque capacity.
