    • The present invention provides a slide type guide mechanism in which an adjusting screw member for eliminating looseness can be automatically tightened. The slide type guide mechanism includes a guide 22 which is provided with a guide groove 30 having a first guide side surface 26 and a second guide side surface 28 extending along straight lines parallel to each other, a threaded hole extending from an outer side surface of the guide toward the guide groove through the first guide side surface 26, a slide 24 which is guided by the guide groove, a screw member threadably engaged in the threaded hole and rotated so as to urge the slide in a direction from the first guide side surface toward the second guide side surface of the guide groove, a torque applying device 54 having a spring for applying to the screw member a torque by which the screw member is rotated so as to move toward the guide groove.

    • In order to facilitate and reduce the time necessary for clamping together and boring a hole through at least two workpieces that are to be joined together, for example by rivets or bolts, a portable clamping and boring apparatus carries out all necessary operating steps once it is manually positioned at the intended location of the bored hole. The clamping and boring apparatus includes a tool body with a clamp device and a boring device mounted thereon. The clamp device includes a clamping yoke with a clamp jaw element at an end thereof, and a clamping cylinder that drives the clamping yoke in an axial direction toward the boring location, from an open starting position into a clamping position. The boring device includes a pneumatic boring machine adapted to receive a boring bit, and a boring feed advance drive connected to the boring machine to drive the boring bit in a feed advance direction opposed to and coaxial with the clamping direction of the clamp jaw element. The feed advance drive and the clamping cylinder are operatively coupled or interconnected so that the clamping step and boring step are automatically triggered together in proper sequence. The apparatus is especially suited for automatically clamping together two workpieces and boring holes therethrough, as necessary for forming a riveted connection between the workpieces, particularly in the construction of aircraft components.

    • A drilling device for removing a spot-welded portion includes a main body casing having a chuck receiving holder, a U-shaped arm one an end of which is connected to a side portion of the chuck receiving holder, a grip handle pivotally connected to a base shoulder portion of the U-shaped arm, a chuck thrusting arm mounted integrally at an end of the grip handle, and a chuck having a drill fixed thereof, the drill facing a free end of the U-shaped arm, and a chuck receiver for receiving the chuck and slidably inserted into the main body casing. The chuck is rotated and projected in the direction toward the free end of the U-shaped arm by movement of the chuck receiver upon depression of the grip handle, the force of which is transmitted via the chuck thrusting arm. The drilling device further includes a projection amount adjusting screw for adjusting the amount of projection of the chuck.

    • A portable horizontal drill press for drilling holes in the surfaces of highway vehicles and construction type equipment including a T-shaped base support beam which is mounted on swivel type wheels with low clearance provided to minimize tipping. A drill support column having a slidable mounting platform for an industrial type drill motor is mounted at one end of the beam support structure. The drill motor platform includes a hand wheel and lead screw combination which is used for feeding the drill motor into the work. The height of the drill motor platform can be adjusted either by a rack and pinion gear provided on a one-piece solid column or the column can be provided in several telescoping sections which can also combine a rack and pinion gear for the upper section of the column. A similar height elevating and positioning arrangement can be provided for a center support column provided at the opposite end of the base support beam. The center support column can be longitudinally moved with respect to the drill platform along the elongated support beam for adjusting the position of the drill center column in relation to the drill motor. A drill center rod is provided on the center support column and adjusted to contact that opposite side of the object so as to back-up the drill during the drilling process. In one embodiment the drill support column has a pivoting socket arrangement whereby the column can be laid down parallel to the support beam to allow the center column to be moved under an object having low clearance and then erected for positioning the drill center opposite the location of the area to be drilled.
