    • A trigger system for operating a plasma arc torch is provided that comprises a selector that operates between at least a first operating position and a second operating position, wherein the first operating position operates the plasma arc torch in a first mode to deliver gas to the plasma arc torch, and the second operating position operates the plasma arc torch in a second mode to deliver the gas and electric power to the plasma arc torch. Further, the selector comprises a neutral position that selects a neutral mode in which delivery of gas and electric power to the plasma arc torch is inhibited. The selector is preferably disposed within a housing of the plasma arc torch and is slidably operable between the first operating position, the second operating position, and the neutral position.

    • A plasma arc torch comprises relatively displaceable electrode and nozzle components having first and second positions relative to one another in which the electrode respectively contacts the nozzle and is spaced an operating distance therefrom. Arrangements are disclosed for relatively displacing the electrode and nozzle between the first and second positions thereof with a pre-determined force of engagement therebetween in the first position, and without having to interrupt the flow of arc gas and/or the flow of arc current during such relative displacement. A torch start up safety test procedure is performed by sequentially displacing the electrode and nozzle between the two positions thereof, sensing for appropriate open and closed circuit conditions therebetween, and enabling the creation of a pilot arc only when a pre-determined sequence of circuit conditions is sensed. Sequential displacement of the electrode and nozzle together with the application of a pre-determined force of engagement therebetween promotes cleaning of oxides from the area of contact between the electrode and nozzle.

    • A plasma arc torch system includes a fault detect circuit for sensing a short between the electrode and the nozzle and disabling the power supply when the short is sensed. A sensing circuit within the torch cable is provided for actuating the fault detect circuit when the cable is severely punctured. The sensing circuit includes a foil embedded within the cable which circumscribes the main conductor to which a drain lead is connected. The drain lead senses a short between the foil and main conductor from a penetrating foreign object and actuates the fault detect circuit. Additionally, the fault detect circuit is effective in combination with a unique continuity interlock circuit disclosed to insure a safe torch. Further, a rectified control circuit is provided to maintain a stable arc preventing erosion of the nozzle and subsequent exposure of the electrode.

    • In a plasma arc torch having an elongated nozzle with an arc constricting orifice of predetermined diameter and electrical control circuit for regulating the operation of the plasma arc torch, there is provided a visible indicia or light associated with an operator control to assist the operator in the safe operation of the torch. The visible indicia or light includes a by-pass control circuit for energizing the visible indicia or light when the operator control is disconnected. If the torch gets too hot, torch operation is prevented by a thermal disconnect. The visible indicia or light will not be illuminated when the operator control is disconnected, so that the operator will know that the torch is too hot to operate. When the torch cools down, the operator control is disconnected, the visible indicia or light will again be illuminated, indicating that normal operation can be resumed.

    • A plasma arc cutting torch housing defines a chamber which has an outlet at the end of the housing. The torch also includes an electrode in the chamber near the outlet and means in the chamber for separating the gas flowing towards the outlet of the housing into a primary gas flow adjacent to the electrode for generating a plasma and a secondary gas flow away from the electrode for cooling the torch and the workpiece. The electrode has a centrally disposed bore therethrough for conveying gas. Inserts in the bore at opposite ends of the electrode burn away so as to expose the centrally disposed bore and thereby automatically quench operation of the plasma arc so as to prevent damage to the torch. In the preferred embodiment, the electrode has a centrally disposed transverse bore and a pair of transverse bores intermediate the central bore and the electrode ends. In an alternate embodiment, the pair of transverse bores are eliminated and gas is conducted by means of an annular gas distributor.
