Specifically, in one embodiment, the method includes broadcasting control signals for the service units over a plurality of control channels distributed in a number of subbands of a frequency bandwidth. The method includes receiving a request for transmitting computer data over the network from a service unit, retrieving provisioning information for the service unit, and selectively assigning one or more data channels based on the provisioning information to transmit the computer data over the network to provide a data path with substantially constant data transfer bandwidth between a head end and the service unit.

摘要： A video and telephony signal distribution network is provided. The network includes a head end for transmitting to a plurality of remote units. The network further includes at least one optical/electrical converter unit that transmits to the remote units over at least two coaxial cables coupled to a common optical/electrical converter unit. Each remote unit transmits upstream electrical data signals over its associated coaxial cable to the optical/electrical converter unit using a common bandwidth. The optical/electrical converter unit converts and frequency shifts the upstream electrical data signals from at least one remote unit to form an optical upstream data signal for transmittal to the head end such that the frequency spectrum used for the upstream communications is simultaneously used on each of the coaxial cables of to optical/electrical converter unit.

摘要： A multi-point to point communication system. The system includes a distribution network between a head end terminal and a plurality of remote units, the head end terminal for downstream transmission of downstream control data and downstream telephony information in a first frequency bandwidth over the distribution network and for receipt of upstream telephony information and upstream control data in a second frequency bandwidth over the distribution network. The head end terminal including a head end multicarrier modem means for modulating at least downstream telephony information on a plurality of orthogonal carriers in a plurality of regions of the first frequency bandwidth and for demodulating at least upstream telephony information modulated on a plurality of orthogonal carriers of a plurality of regions in the second frequency bandwidth. The head end controller means operatively connected to the head end multicarrier modem means for controlling transmission of the downstream telephony information and downstream control data and for controlling receipt of the upstream control data and upstream telephony information. The system also includes a plurality of service unit modem means, each service unit modem means associated with at least one remote unit and operatively connected to the distribution network for upstream transmission of upstream telephony information and upstream control data in one of the plurality of regions of the second frequency bandwidth and for receipt of the downstream control data and downstream telephony information in one of the plurality of regions in the first frequency bandwidth.

摘要： A distributed processing telephone system for providing "plug-and-play" capability. In particular, a key telephone system comprises a plurality of telephone sets. Each telephone set is coupled to a least one common communications channel, or telephone line, and includes at least one tunable RF modem. There is no key service unit (KSU). That is, the system is KSU-less. Resources of the telephone system are allocated using a peer-to-peer protocol. For example, as each telephone set is newly added to the system, the new telephone set adaptively determines its own allocation of resources, e.g., intercom numbers, etc. During operation, each telephone set requests the appropriate resources from its peers.

摘要： A multiplexed data channel telephone system comprising a master station (221) and one or more remote stations (222) is disclosed. Each station (221, 222) is bridged, in a parallel electrical connection, onto a wire-pair (201) that extends from the stations to a telephone switching system. Each station (221, 222) includes a voiceband line interface (110, 310) for connecting to the wire-pair (201) at voiceband frequencies, and a radio frequency line interface (700, 800) for connecting to the wire-pair (201) at radio frequencies. Each station further includes multiplexer and demultiplexer equipment (500, 600) for frequency shifting a data channel between baseband and rf. Amplitude modulation and half-duplex transmission are used in the data channel. Telephone status and control information, including ringing and answer control, are exchanged between controllers (160, 360) via the data channel. Remote stations (222) minimize the amount of equipment required by using the data channel to control common equipment at the master station (221) that interacts with incoming telephone lines (201, 202).

摘要： A communication system is provided for the interconnection of telephones and other instruments capable of communicating via the voice spectrum, the system providing a single transmission line such as a coaxial cable by which full duplex communication is provided between any pair of telephones. Each instrument is coupled to the transmission line by a control unit which includes computer operated transceiver equipment for paging other ones of the control units to initiate a telephonic communication. Each control unit is provided with an identification number and circuitry for recognizing the identification number contained within a paging signal so as to initiate a response. In a separate spectral portion of the transmission line, there are provided sets of analog communication channels each of which has upper and lower spectral portions to provide two-way communication in opposite directions between a pair of telephones engaged in communication. A transmitter and a receiver in each of the control units is provided for the communication of analog signals of both voice and data via the voice channel, each control unit including circuitry for tuning the transmitter and the receiver to the selected channel in accordance with digital data transmitted via the transmission line and specifying a selected one of the voice channels.

摘要： A head end controller is described. The head end controller controls a plurality of service units in a telecommunications system with a multi-carrier transmission scheme. The head end controller includes a logic circuit that generates control messages for the plurality of service units. Each service unit is assigned to at least one subband of a transmission bandwidth. The head end controller further includes a transceiver that is coupled to a distribution network of the transmission system, wherein the transceiver broadcasts control messages to the plurality of service units. The plurality of service units are configured to use a multiple access scheme to transmit on a radio frequency carrier using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) so that transmissions from the plurality of service unit are received from the distribution network at the transceiver synchronized within an OFDM waveform.

摘要： Systems and methods for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing are provided. In one embodiment, a multi-carrier modem comprises: a receiver configured to de-modulate symbols from at least one of a plurality of spectrally overlapping carrier signals to produce a receiver output; a transmitter configured to modulate symbols onto at least one of a plurality of the spectrally overlapping carrier signals; a processor coupled to the transmitter, wherein the processor outputs data for transmission by the transmitter, wherein the processor applies an inverse Fourier transform to the data transmitted by the transmitter; the processor coupled to the receiver, wherein the processor applies a Fourier transform to the receiver output; and a controller programmed to instruct the transmitter to transmit at least one symbol representing a request for bandwidth allocation on a first carrier; wherein the controller is further programmed to determine when a collision has occurred on the first carrier.
