摘要： A switch device with two modes of operation includes at least one switch comprising, carried by a substrate, two conductive lands and an electrically conductive elastic capsule in contact with one land and, in the unoperated condition, overlying the other land so as to be capable of being urged into contact with the latter. An electrical signal from a source is applied to the capsule. A circuit measures variations of the signal due to the proximity of an electrically conductive object. The device can be used to implement matrix keyboards combining the functions of a conventional keypad and a tactile pad.

摘要： In a capacitive switchcore of the type in which each key cell includes a contact switch in series with a key cell capacitor, an improvement is disclosed in which an intracell coactive loading capacitor is added to each key cell. The intracell coactive loading capacitor is connected between ground and the junction of the contact switch with the key cell capacitor. A matrix of key cells so formed is self-referencing, in that the need for a separate reference capacitor to load the sense line is eliminated. Instead, loading is provided intrinsically by the effect of the intracell coactive loading capacitors acting through multiple key cells connected to a sense line. A preferred embodiment in a capacitive membrane switchcore is described.

A plurality of reflector members, each one associated with a different one of the keys, reflect acoustic energy when the associated key is actuated. 摘要： Encoding apparatus for a business machine includes a resilient striker for inducing diverging sound waves within a rod by impact with it at a given location. Transducers positioned along the rod on each side of the striker and at unequal distances from it, convert the sound wave fronts into a first and a second output signal having a predetermined time interval between them which is dependent upon the location of impact with the rod. The transducers are connected to a logic unit which includes an oscillator-driven binary counter. The first output signal starts the counter and subsequent arrival of the second output signal determines the elapsed time, the counter output at that instant being a binary code value usable for any desired purpose: control, display, etc. The encoding apparatus may be incorporated in a keyboard having a number of keys and a corresponding number of strikers differentially positioned along the rod such that each key produces output signals with a predetermined time interval between them and accordingly a unique binary code may be obtained upon actuation of each key.

摘要： A touch-responsive circuit uses an ohmic contact connected via a dc blocking capacitor to the high impedance input of an amplifier. A controllable impedance element shunts the capacitor and amplifier input. When the element is in the high impedance state, a weak voltage induced by touching the ohmic contact causes the amplifier to produce an output signal indicative of such touching. Touch response is disabled when the element is in the low impedance state. Advantageously, the controllable impedance element comprises a series-connected pair of diodes that are selectively forward or reverse biased; the element also may comprise an active electronic device such as a transistor.A data input terminal employs a matrix of ohmic contacts each having an associated touch-responsive circuit. Column scanning is accomplished by conditioning the controllable impedance elements in all but a selected one column to the low impedance state so that touch response is enabled only in that one selected column. The ohmic contacts in each row are connected to a common amplifier for that row. A priority encoder provides an encoded signal designating which amplifier produces a touching-indicative signal, and hence designating which row in the enabled column contains the touched ohmic contact.

摘要： A coordinate digitizer is utilized in a phototypesetting automatic publications system, by means of which ideographic symbols are selected and electrically entered into the system. An array or ''''menu'''' of ideographic symbols is provided, and a coordinate digitizer including a pointer is connected so that designation of a particular symbol in the array by the pointer causes the generation of signals representative of the coordinates of that symbol in the array. A computer memory stores data for each of the symbols so that when coordinate signals corresponding to a particular symbol in the array are supplied to the computer means, the corresponding data are retrieved and utilized to form that symbol in the phototypesetter. The data thus retrieved from the computer memory are also utilized to operate a local symbol display, such as a facsimile recorder or cathode-ray tube display device, positioned adjacent the coordinate digitizer so that rapid proofing of the entered symbols may be provided. Preferably the ideographic-data input terminal is remote from the computer storage means and connected thereto by an appropriate communications link, and preferably scan converting means are provided adjacent the computer storage means to produce signals representing a lower-definition version of the symbols to be reproduced, which latter signals are sent back to the remote terminal to form the local display. Editing and format commands are also included in the ''''menu'''' to effect editing and composing of the text.
