    • A disk drive test slot (500) includes a housing (550) that defines a test compartment (560) for receiving and supporting a disk drive transporter (400) carrying a disk drive (600) for testing. The housing also defines an open end (561) that provides access to the test compartment for insertion and removal of disk drive transporter carrying a disk drive for testing. The disk drive test slot also includes a mounting plate (504) connected to the housing. One or more isolators (520, 530) are disposed between the housing and the mounting plate. The one or more isolators are operable to inhibit transmission of vibrational energy between the housing and the mounting plate.

    • A digital storage element (320) is described. A device is configured to including a storage element (320) for access by a user responsive to a native control code (308). A processing arrangement (302) executes a control program for controlling the overall storage element device and executing at least a portion of the native control code (308) as part of the control program for interfacing (322) with the storage element (320). A programming arrangement is provided separately from the device for customizing a read channel within the storage element. Command, user interaction and data transfer execution are discussed for mitigation of potential mechanical shock effects. Status indications relating to the storage element are provided to including head position and mechanical shock. Calibration, test and operational monitoring procedures, for using head position status, are described. Failure configuration monitoring is provided in tracking overall performance and design considerations.

    • An improved media player and a method for operating a portable computing device (e.g., media player) are disclosed. According to one aspect, a portable computing device is able to protect its disk drive when being subjected to undesired levels of acceleration. The portable computing device protects its disk drive by monitoring for such accelerations and operating to avoid usage of the disk drive during periods of acceleration. Through such protection, the likelihood of damage to the disk drive or loss of data stored on the disk drive is able to be substantially reduced. According to another aspect, a user of a portable computing device can be alerted when the portable computing device is being subjected to undesirable levels of acceleration.

    • Described herein is a method for detecting an anomalous event, like a crash or a free fall, in an electronic apparatus (1) , which envisages the steps of: detecting at least one acceleration signal (Acc) indicative of an acceleration acting on the electronic apparatus (1); and detecting the anomalous event as a function of the acceleration signal (Acc). The step of detecting the anomalous event envisages the steps of: monitoring a normal-mode condition of the electronic apparatus (1); and detecting the anomalous event at least based on the exit of the electronic apparatus (1) from the normal-mode condition. In particular, the step of monitoring a normal-mode condition envisages the steps of: determining a change or variation of acceleration (ΔAcc) associated to the acceleration signal (Acc) ; executing a comparison between the variation of acceleration (ΔAcc) and an acceleration threshold (THA); and determining the permanence in, or exit from, the normal-mode condition according to the result of the comparison. Also described is a detection device (6) implementing the above method.
