    • A method and apparatus is disclosed for controlling energisation of a take-up motor driving a take-up spool of used ink ribbon in thermal printing apparatus. Prior to a printing cycle, the take-up motor is energised to rotate the take-up spool until tension in the ink ribbon caused rotation of an ink ribbon supply spool. The take-up spool is then rotated a predetermined amount and resultant rotation of the supply spool is determined by sensing means. A function dependent upon the rotation of the supply spool is determined and used during subsequent operation of the apparatus to control energisation of the take-up motor such as to wind the used ribbon onto the take-up spool with a desired amount of tension in the used ribbon.

    • Disclosed is a tape feeding, cutting and ejecting apparatus for a mailing machine which has a feed deck for feeding envelopes therealong and a postage meter for printing postage indicia on successive envelopes as they are fed along the feed deck. The tape feeding, cutting and ejecting apparatus is mounted in the mailing machine above the feed deck and adjacent to the postage meter on the side thereof opposite to the direction of the feed of envelopes for feeding successive finite lengths of tape to the postage meter for printing of postage indicia on a portion thereof and for cutting and ejecting the printed portion of the finite lengths of tape from the mailing machine. The apparatus includes a tape holding assembly and means for pivotally mounting the tape holding assembly for movement between a normal operating position and an operator accessible position to facilitate loading and threading of a fresh roll of tape. The apparatus also includes a sensing means for sensing when the tape holding assembly is not in the normal operating position and also when the tape supply is exhausted.

The linking assembly further rotatively supports an ejection roller in a home position biasing against said ejection plate through an aperture in said deck when said platen roller is in the home position principle for ejecting an envelope after completion of the print cycle and rotatively supporting said ejection roller in a second position below said deck during a print cycle.

    • The position sensing assembly is employed in combination with a thermal printing postage meter having a base supporting a registration wall and a deck, and a thermal print head fixably mounted to the registration wall above a portion of the deck to define a print station for printing a postage indicia on an envelope. A position sensing lever is mounted to a positioning support arrangement for providing supporting the position sensing lever support in a first position such that the position sensing lever has a home position where in a portion extending generally perpendicular to the deck to encounter the leading edge of the envelope positioned on the deck. The position lever encounters the envelope leading edge such that the leading edge deflects the position sensing lever when positioned in the print station and for repositioning the position sensing lever in a second position which removes the position sensing lever from encountering the leading edge of the envelope. A microcontroller is in communication with a sensor acted upon by position sensing lever for causing the positioning support arrangement to position the position sensing lever in the second position when encountering the envelope leading edge and, as a result thereof, initial of a meter print cycle. After the print cycle is completed the position sensing lever is returned to the home position.

    • A method and system are provided for providing validated labels that are attached to mail trays 36 immediately upon mail being processed by a mailer and placed in a tray. Mail lists and programs for sanitizing the mail list and sorting the mail to achieve postal discounts are stored in a mailer's processor 18, 20. A printer 22 is controlled to print addresses on documents, such as letters, that are forwarded to an inserter. A mail list stored in the processor indicates where the mail is to be sent, the class of mail, level of sortation and the contents of the mail. Tray contents are computed and appropriate labels are prepared by a label printer 34 under its control. By making the tray label print an integral part of the mail processing system, as opposed to being an adjunct to it, the providing of labels becomes more efficient, reliable and economical.
