    • A time period of an event is determined by charging a known value capacitor from a constant current source during the event. The resultant voltage on the capacitor is proportional to the event time period and may be calculated from the resultant voltage and known capacitance value. Capacitance is measured by charging a capacitor from a constant current source during a known time period. A long time period event may be measured by charging a first capacitor at the start of the event and a second capacitor at the end of the event, while counting clock times therebetween. Delay of an event is done by charging voltages on first and second capacitors at beginning and end of event, while comparing voltages thereon with a reference voltage.

    • An apparatus for measuring a time interval between a start signal edge and a stop signal edge provides a stable clock (17) into a logic gate delay line (21). A phase lock controller (22) controls the switching speed fo all gates. The gate output signals and the clock signal form a set of phase distributed clock signals applied to a strat time measurement unit (TMU) (12) and a similar stop TMU (14). Start TMU (12) counts edges of one clock phase occuring between the arming signal and the start signal and outputs time delay data as a whole and fractional number of clock signal periods and identifies the phase following the start signal. The stop TMU (14) does the same with the arming signal and stop signal. The desired interval is the difference between the TMU delay data.

    • A difference capture circuit (10) for determining the duration of a digital signal pulse. The difference circuit includes a branch (20) couplable to a standard counter (50) for activating the counter (50) to count as a function of a system clock pulse (CLK), and a triggering circuit (30) couplable to a standard capture register (60) for fetching the count from the counter (50). The difference capture circuit (10) may be incorporated into standard timer unit circuitry and is designed to calculate the difference between either the rise and fall times for an incoming signal (G2), or the rise to rise time of that signal (G2). Adding the difference capture circuit to a timing unit eliminates the need to use RAM, and minimizes processor resources, in obtaining the timing associated with a signal change.
