摘要： A system and method for argon and nitrogen extraction and liquefaction from a low-pressure tail gas of an ammonia production plant is provided. The preferred tail gas of the ammonia production plant comprises methane, nitrogen, argon, and hydrogen. The disclosed system and method provides for the methane rejection via rectification and hydrogen rejection by way of a side stripper column or phase separator. The resulting nitrogen and argon containing stream is separated and liquefied in a double column distillation system.

摘要： An ammonia plant is disclosed, where ammonia purge gas (20), is sent to a cryogenic recovery unit, said recovery unit comprising means of cooling (102, 202, 302, 402, 502) and a high-pressure phase separator (103, 203, 303, 403, 503) operating at loop pressure; inside said unit the purge gas (20) is cooled to a cryogenic temperature, and a partial liquefaction of methane and argon is achieved; the high-pressure phase separator separates the cooled stream into a gaseous stream and a bottom liquid; the gaseous stream is reheated in a passage of a heat exchanger; the unit is then capable to export a gaseous stream (123, 223, 323, 423, 523) containing nitrogen and hydrogen at loop pressure, that can be reintroduced at the suction side of the circulator (4) of the loop.

摘要： An argon purification system is provided which includes a cryogenic heat exchanger, a cryogenic distillation column. The cryogenic heat exchanger is configured to remove heat from a pre-treated argon waste stream to create a cold feed stream. The cryogenic distillation column includes packing, a reboiler, and an overhead condenser, as well as an upper portion and a lower portion and is configured to receive a liquid feed stream and to produce a bottoms argon product stream and a gas waste stream. The reboiler is positioned in the lower portion of the cryogenic distillation column and is configured to condense the cold feed stream to produce the liquid feed stream. The condenser is positioned in the upper portion of the cryogenic distillation column and is configured to heat the bottoms argon product stream such that the bottoms argon product stream evaporates to a purified vapor phase argon stream.

摘要： A system for the purification and recycle of impure argon is disclosed herein. The system of the present invention can produce very high purity argon, i.e., about 1 ppb or less of impurities. In one embodiment, a cryogenic separation apparatus is used to remove the nitrogen, hydrocarbon, and hydrogen impurities from the argon stream. A catalyst bed is then operated at ambient temperature to remove hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon monoxide impurities to provide the purified argon product.

摘要： Carbon monoxide is recovered by a cryogenic route from a gas mixture, for example from the tail gas of an operation for scrubbing with nitrogen in the preparation of an ammonia synthesis mixture, this mixture containing carbon monoxide, hydrogen and other constituents including nitrogen. The hydrogen is separated off by partial condensation and the other components by distillation of the condensate. The carbon monoxide is produced by distillation in two columns, of which only one has a head condenser fed with a flow of liquid carbon monoxide. A liquid flow is drawn at an intermediate level in the column with the head condenser and directed to the head of the other column.

摘要： The present invention is directed to a method for recovering argon from a feed mixture comprising argon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and hydrogen which comprises the steps of (a) purifying the feed mixture to remove contaminants, (b) compressing the purified feed mixture to a separation pressure, and (c) passing the compressed purified feed mixture through a pressure swing adsorption system to separate carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and all or most of the nitrogen from the mixture as adsorbed products and to produce an argon-rich fraction as a non-adsorbed product. The argon-rich fraction from step (c) may be further purified by passing the fraction to a cryogenic fractional distillation system to separate hydrogen and any remaining nitrogen from the fraction as a distillate product and to produce a pure argon product. In a second and third embodiment, the invention is directed to a method for recovering argon from a feed mixture comprising argon, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and oxygen, wherein oxygen is removed from the argon-rich fraction exiting the pressure swing adsorption system in step (c) by passing the fraction to a second pressure swing adsorption system before or after further purification of the fraction in a cryogenic fractional distillation system.

摘要： An improved process is disclosed for argon recovery from an ammonia synthesis plant purge gas comprising hydrogen, nitrogen, argon, ammonia, and methane. In one embodiment of the present invention, this purge gas is subjected to the following steps:(i) Separation of ammonia at high pressure by adsorption using zeolite molecular sieve material, which is subsequently regenerated by hot purge combined with pressure reduction;(ii) Separation of methane and most of the nitrogen by pressure swing adsorption using a molecular sieve or an activated carbon material having greater selectivity for methane than argon;(iii) Separation of hydrogen for recycle to the ammonia synthesis plant using a high pressure cryogenic distillation column of a membrane separator; and(iv) Separation of the nitrogen by cryogenic distillation means to obtain essentially pure liquid argon product.

摘要： A process for prefractionation of a feed mixture comprised of at least two components prior to introduction to the main fractionation zone, wherein substantially liquid feed maintained at pressures higher than that prevailing in the fractionation zone is cooled by indirect heat exchange, part or all of said cooled feed is flashed at a pressure at least above that of the fractionation zone, to produce flashed material having a liquid phase and a vapor phase. The refrigeration potential of the flashed material is utilized for cooling of the feed by indirect heat exchange with a liquid or mixed phase portion of said flashed material thereby increasing the vapor-to-liquid ratio of the latter prior to its introduction to the fractionation zone at a suitable point. Remaining feed is introduced to the fractionation zone at one or more other suitable points. Preferred feeds disclosed are nitrogen-containing mixtures, such as mixtures comprising nitrogen and methane, nitrogen and argon, nitrogen, methane and argon. A specific example is included as to the application of the invention to the separation of the individual components of an ammonia synthesis purge gas and to the recovery of argon in either liquid or gaseous form.
