    • A heat pump system includes a heat pump circuit, a heat load circuit, first and second heat exchangers, a flow rate regulation mechanism and a controller. A first passage connects branching and converging portions of the heat load circuit. A second passage connects the branching and converging portions without converging with the first passage. The first and second heat exchanger perform heat exchange between discharge refrigerant from the low and high stage compression mechanisms and fluid in the first and second passages, respectively. The flow rate regulation mechanism regulates a ratio between flow rates through the first and second passages. The controller controls the flow rate regulation mechanism so that the fluid is allowed to flow to the first heat exchanger when a temperature of refrigerant flowing into the first heat exchanger is lower than a heating target temperature of converged fluid flowing through the heat load circuit.

    • A method for controlling a heat pump including an outdoor unit including a compressor and a first heat exchanger, an indoor unit including a second heat exchanger and an expansion valve to perform air stream cooling and heating operations, and a hydro unit connected among the compressor, the first heat exchanger, and the expansion valve, to change a flow direction of refrigerant in accordance with cold water and hot water operations. In the control method, it is determined whether the hot water operation and the air stream heating operation are simultaneously selected. When the hot water operation and the air stream heating operation are simultaneously selected, an opening degree of a valve included in the hydro unit is adjusted, to adjust amounts of refrigerant respectively supplied from the compressor to the hydro unit and the indoor unit.

    • A heating system control unit is provided for use with a heating system. The control unit includes a switching element connected to a first temperature switch associated with a first stage heater, a second temperature switch and a second stage heater of the heating system. The switching element is adapted for actuating the second stage heater upon the receipt of the second temperature signal and further continuing the actuation of the second stage heater until the lack of receipt of both the first temperature signal and the second temperature signal. A thermostat on the outdoor coil serves to pass the signal from the second temperature switch only upon a temperature of the outdoor coil being below a predetermined amount of about 25 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • A heating system has a primary heat source such as a heat pump, with a capacity that occasionally needs to be supplemented from a supplemental heat source such as an electrical resistance heater. The heating system heats and circulates a medium such as air via supply and return ducts. A thermostat responsive to the heated space has two outputs for operation at different user-selected temperatures defining stages of operation at which the primary and secondary heat sources are normally drawn upon. The invention controls the duct temperature by activating the supplemental heat source according to a further setpoint, that is adjusted by a processor or other control circuit. A temperature sensor allows the control circuit to determine the duct temperature. The control circuit is also coupled to the two thermostat outputs and to a memory register storing the variable duct temperature setpoint. The duct temperature is compared to the duct temperature setpoint and the supplemental heating means is enabled to increase the duct temperature when the duct temperature falls below the variable setpoint. The control circuit adjusts the duct temperature setpoint upwardly upon occurrence of the temperature in the heated space dropping below a lower one of the space temperature setpoints (indicating that the heat pump is not keeping up), and downwardly upon the temperature in the heated space exceeding a higher one of the two space temperature setpoints (indicating that the heating capacity is adequate and use of the resistance heater should be reduced).

    • Apparatus are disclosed for conditioning the air within an indoor space and include first heat transfer means for selectively heating air passing to the space and a heat pump selectively operable in a heating mode, also for heating air passing to the indoor space. Control means are provided for effecting operation of the first heat transfer means and the heat pump which include means for sensing the demand for heat within the indoor space and for distinguishing between a relatively low demand and a relatively high demand. Operation of the heat pump is effected in response to a relatively low demand for heat until such demand is satisfied. In the event that a relatively high demand for heat is sensed, operation of the heat pump is terminated and the first heat transfer means is operated until such time as both the relatively high and low demands for heat are satisfied. In the event that outdoor ambient temperature drops below a predetermined level, means are provided for preventing operation of the heat pump and for effecting operation of the first heat transfer means in response to the relatively low demand for heat.
