    • An apparatus for conveying solid waste to a furnace includes an opening to an elongated channel into which waste material is received and an outlet open to the furnace. A reciprocating ram with a head plate located in the channel opposite the outlet forces the waste toward the outlet. The ram also has an upper shield dimensioned to be slightly greater in area than the opening such that the opening is blocked when the ram is extended. The channel also includes an actuator-impelled restrictor plate for compressing waste as it is forced through said channel into a narrower portion, and a isolation door operable to close off the channel.

    • A method and apparatus for burning material having a primary burner in the form of an elongated cylinder, the ends of the cylinder closed with stationary end walls. The cylinder is rotated about its longitudinal axis which is horizontal. A ram material inlet is provided in one end wall for compressing and feeding material into the cylinder. An air inlet conduit introduces air into the cylinder to promote burning of the material in the cylinder as the cylinder rotates. The combustion cylinder is maintained by an exhaust fan and air control valves at a pressure below atmospheric. A secondary afterburner is provided adjacent the primary burner that receives combustion gases from the primary burner. A cyclonic separator is positioned downstream of the gases burned in the afterburner. A programmable logic controller connected to air valves and sensors monitors the combustion process to sustain maximum combustion efficiency at temperatures above 1700 degrees Fahrenheit.

    • Municipal or other solid waste is delivered in loose form to a processing facility where it is compacted into a supply chute adjacent the upper portion of a reactor. The compaction serves to remove most of the air and some of the water from the waste as well as to seal the reactor against air infiltration. The supply chute is equipped with a number of pusher units which are capable of pushing a portion of the compacted waste in the form of a block into the reactor. The blocks of compacted waste are deposited in the top of the reactor in response to a signal related to the height of waste in the reactor. A pivotally and extendible mounted plasma arc torch is employed as a heat source to pyrolyze organic waste components to generate desired by-product gases. Air and steam are added in controlled quantities to improve the operational efficiency and the by-product gas composition. Residual materials which do not pyrolyze are melted and cooled into a substantially inert vitrified mass.

    • A system is disclosed in which municipal mixed solid waste is delivered to a processing facility where it is compacted before being placed into a reactor. The compaction apparatus serves to remove most of the air and some of the water from the waste as well as to seal the reactor against air infiltration. A transfer apparatus, in response to a signal relating to the height of waste in the reactor, sequentially deposits blocks of compacted waste in the top of the reactor when the height is low. The reactor has a pivotally and extensively mounted plasma arc torch as a heat source which is effective to pyrolyze organic waste components to generate desired by-product gases. Air and steam are added in controlled quantities to improve the operational efficiency and the by-product gas composition. The residual materials which do not pyrolyze are melted and cooled into a substantially inert vitrified mass.

    • A guide system for a reciprocating grate system having a grate surface, alternating rows of stationary and movable grate blocks, a movable carriage, a fixed undergrate structure, and a driving force device. The guide system includes guide units which guide the movable carriage and the movable rows of grate blocks with respect to the fixed undergrate structure and the stationary rows of grate blocks during reciprocating stroke cycles of the driving force device. Each guide unit includes a fixed guide member and a movable guide member. The fixed guide member is attached to the fixed undergrate structure and has an upper non-linear contour with wear plates, each having a wear surface. Each movable guide member is attached to the movable carriage and has a lower non-linear contour with wear plates, each having a wear surface. When the movable carriage is in an installed position, the wear surfaces are in slidable contact with each other. The wear plates on each guide member are angularly displaced from each other to maintain lateral alignment of the movable carriage and the movable grate block rows, and provide additional wear surface area to increase the useful life of the wear plates. The wear plates eliminate the need for lateral restraints, by maintaining lateral alignment of the movable carriage and the movable grate block rows. A levelling device, including levelling bolts on the fixed guide member, prevents uneven wear of the wear surfaces during operation.
