    • A joint restraint assembly for connecting pipe ends together, or to other objects, which includes a body encircling the pipe. The body has a plurality of cavities adjacent to the pipe with a segment configured to fit into each cavity. One or more threaded bores are disposed through the body into each cavity. A threaded bolt extends through each threaded bore to engage the segment in that cavity, and to pre-load the segment against the pipe when assembled thereon. Mechanical or pressure loading, tending to pull the pipe out of the restraint assembly, causes the segment to self actuate, and the application of increasing load causes a proportional increase to the force engaging the segment to the pipe. The joint restraint assembly reliably accommodates comparatively high levels of mechanical loading and/or pipe internal pressure, and does so without relying upon the limited force produced by the threaded bolt pre-load on the segments at the time of assembly.

    • A coupling for attachment to the end portion of a pipe includes jaw members adapted to slide along an inner end taper in the coupling body so that linear movement of the jaw members toward the end of the inner end taper adjacent an end of the coupling body causes movement of the jaw members radially inwardly of the coupling body against the end portion of the pipe when received in the coupling body. The coupling may include a bell type gasket to function as a spring and the spring action of the gasket may be augmented by installing a springy crib ring around the gasket inside the coupling body.

    • A preferred joint restraint includes a dampening force and a restraining force to control relative movement between a pad and gland and between the gland and bolt, respectively. The preferred restraint includes a gland, pads, and bolts. Preferably, a flexible member disposed in the pad selectively provides the dampening and retaining force. A preferred joint restraint also includes a pad and a bolt that coact to provide a controlled wedging action. The wedging action supplies supplemental tooth penetration and/or enhanced clamping force that stabilizes a shifting tubular member (pipe). A preferred tooth arrangement for a restraint pad produces an intermittent penetration pattern in the pipe. A preferred spacing member for a restraint tunes a clamping force generated by the restraint to accommodate variations in pipe geometry and/or materials. A preferred restraint is arranged according to a method that uses pipe expansion to provide an enhanced gripping action.

An actuator housing is affixed to an external surface of the box portion. The actuator housing has an outer bore and a threaded inner bore. An actuator body is threadably received in the inner bore. The actuator body has a hex head on its first end. The actuator body has a threaded fastener bore extending from the first end for receiving a threaded fastener. The actuator body has a second end that has a stem receptacle formed therein. The fastener bore is in communication with the stem receptacle. An actuator head, which includes a flange and a stem, is provided wherein the stem is positioned within the stem receptacle for sliding engagement therewith. Threads formed on the threaded fastener engage a threaded fastener receptacle formed in the stem of the actuator head. A dog interfaces with the flange and is slidably mounted with respect to the actuator body for engaging a groove in the pin portion of a riser. A threaded fastener is provided to be threadably received in the threaded fastener bore of the actuator body.
