    • An eccentric tensioning device for tensioning a traction means is provided. The eccentric tensioning device includes a track roller device having a running disk and a rolling bearing, a work eccentric for supporting the track roller device, the work eccentric being supported on an adjustment eccentric, a single torsion spring for pretensioning the work eccentric, and a fixing device for securing the work eccentric in a mounting position in which the torsion spring is located in a pretensioned state. The fixing device is positionable on a flange surface upon which the eccentric tensioning device is mountable during attachment, in which the running disk is forced radially relative to the rotating axis of the rolling bearing against the associated traction means under effect of the work eccentric, and a free switching path is traversed through an axial play being overcome against an axial force applied solely by the torsion spring.

    • An eccentric tensioning device for tensioning the traction means of a traction means drive is provided. The invention provides solutions, through which advantages are given in the installation of tensioning devices under assembly-specific aspects. The eccentric tensioning device for a traction means drive includes a track roller device, which has a running disk and a rolling bearing provided for supporting this disk, a work eccentric for supporting the track roller device such that it can be displaced in a radial direction relative to the rotating axis of the rolling bearing through pivoting of the work eccentric, a torsion spring for pretensioning the work eccentric, and a fixing device for securing the work eccentric in a mounting position, in which the torsion spring is located in pretensioned state. The fixing device is constructed such that it can be brought into a released state during attachment of the eccentric tensioning device to a flange surface, in which the running disk is forced radially relative to the rotating axis of the rolling bearing against the associated traction means due to the work eccentric. Therefore, it is possible in an advantageous way to create a tensioning device, in which during the mounting of the traction means, the work or the operating eccentric is fixed in an end position and an activation of the tensioning device is guaranteed in a reliable way.

    • A belt tensioner for tensioning a belt for a motor vehicle comprises a pivot shaft, a pivoting structure mounted for pivotal movement on the pivot shaft, and a pulley mounted for rotation on the pivoting structure. A spring biases the pivoting structure in a direction that moves the pulley mounted on the pivoting structure into tensioning engagement with the belt. A bolt is constructed and arranged to mount the belt tensioner on the motor vehicle engine mount. The bolt is constructed and arranged to be tightened to a predetermined extent for installing the tensioner of the motor vehicle, the predetermined extent is the same extent to which the bolt is tightened during normal operation of the tensioner. A clamping structure applies a predetermined clamping force on the pivot shaft after the bolt is tightened to the predetermined extent. The predetermined clamping force is sufficiently large to maintain the pivot shaft in perpendicular relation to the engine mount and prevent tilting of the pivot shaft when the tensioner is moved into installed tensioning engagement with the belt, yet sufficiently small to permit manual movement of the pivot shaft relative to the mounting bolt for adjusting the amount of tension applied by the tensioner to the belt.

    • Disclosed is a tensioner for use in an engine. The tensioner comprises a fixed structure that fixes to the engine. A movable structure is mounted for movement relative to the fixed structure in a belt tensioning and opposite directions. A pulley member has a belt engaging surface that engages with the belt. One of the fixed and movable structures has an interior surface defining a fluid chamber containing fluid and the other includes a chamber dividing structure. The chamber dividing structure defines first and second chamber portions on opposing sides thereof. A biasing element biases the movable structure in the tensioning direction to tension the belt. Relative movement of the movable structure in the tensioning direction displaces fluid from the first to the second chamber portion and increases fluid pressure in the first chamber portion and decreases fluid pressure in the second chamber portion, and the reverse occurs during movement of the movable structure in the opposite direction. The chamber dividing structure allows the fluid to flow between the chamber portions in a restricted manner so as to yieldingly resist the relative movement of the movable structure and thereby dampen such movement. The chamber dividing structure is constructed such that the fluid flow restriction is greater when the movable structure moves in the opposite direction than in the tensioning direction, thereby providing the movable structure with greater resistance to movement in the opposite direction than in the tensioning direction.

    • A belt tensioner for a motor vehicle engine comprises a pivot shaft and an eccentric pivoted structure mounted for pivoted movement on the pivot shaft. The belt tensioner has a rotatable pulley member mounted for rotation on the eccentric pivoted structure. A spring is constructed and arranged to bias the eccentric pivoted structure in a direction tending to force the rotatable pulley member into tensioning engagement with a belt trained about the pulley member. A mounting bolt is constructed and arranged to mount the belt tensioner on the motor vehicle engine, said pivot shaft being movable relative to said mounting bolt and towards said belt during a belt tensioner installation procedure. A linear guiding structure provides surfaces of interengagement between said belt tensioner and said motor vehicle engine to limit movement of the pivot shaft to linear movement toward the belt during the installation procedure. The present invention also relates to a method of installing a belt tensioner in which the pivot shaft moves in a substantially exactly linear fashion as the tensioner is moved into tensioning engagement with the belt. In a preferred embodiment, when the belt tensioner is moved into tensioning engagement with the belt, an external force is applied to the tensioner to balance any belt load forces tending to tilt the tensioner during installation. The present invention also discloses a tensioner that has contact portions that oppose the tilting force applied by the belt during installation, and a portion that extends beyond the contact portions to facilitate installation.
