    • A fuel supply unit (40) for vehicles includes a flange assembly (28) and a reservoir assembly (38). The flange assembly includes a flange (36), at least a pair of metal struts (26) extending from the flange, and electrically conductive spring structure (20). The spring structure includes a first and second spring members (24, 26) having coils. Each coil receives at least a portion of an associated strut. A central leg member (30) joins the first and second spring members. The reservoir assembly includes a reservoir (42), a fuel pump (44) in the reservoir, a fuel filter (46) in the reservoir and associated with the fuel pump for filtering fuel. The fuel filter has an electrically conductive portion (48). The struts are coupled with the reservoir with the spring members being disposed between the flange and the reservoir. The central leg member contacts the electrically conductive portion of the fuel filter.

    • A fuel supply system is provided with a heat exchanger disposed in a generally planer cavity within a base. A manifold attaches to the base and contains the generally planer cavity. A heat exchanger, which comprises a fuel conduit, is disposed within the cavity. As fuel flows from a fuel pump to a fuel injection system of an internal combustion engine, it passes through the fuel conduit which is bathed in a flow of coolant. Some of the fuel flows directly from the fuel conduit to the fuel injection system, but excess fuel flows through a pressure regulator and a filter before being passed through the pump again to recirculate through the fuel conduit of the cooler. The quantity of fuel stored within the volume of the fuel supply system is significantly reduced because of the location of the various components and the fact that the components, such as the filter, regulator, and pump are attached directly to the base of the system. This reduces the need for interconnecting tubing or hoses and the resulting reduced amount of fuel stored in the system can be cooled much more rapidly when the engine is restarted.

    • A compact mixing apparatus includes a housing and at least one motionless, although possibly vibrated, mixing element in the housing. The mixing element divides into plural streams fluid-like material flowing therethrough, at least twice relatively abruptly changes the flow direction of such streams and preferably imparts rotational momentum to the streams. A chamber in the housing permits generally turbulent mixing of such streams after they exit the mixing element. In accordance with the method of the invention fluid-like material delivered to a housing is divided into plural streams which have their flow directions changed at least twice, and the streams possibly also are rotated and are then combined in a relatively turbulent manner to form a well-mixed output. Moreover, a combustion engine system is disclosed using such a mixing apparatus to mix fuel with a supplemental fluid, with the combined material being delivered to such engine for combustion.
