    • A tooth holder for a cutter of a mining machine has a holder body fixed to the cutter and normally displaced thereby in a predetermined longitudinal direction. This body is formed with a longitudinally generally forwardly open bore, an outer transversely directed seat face adjacent the bore, and a feed passage opening at the outer seat. A sleeve is received in the bore and a cutter tooth is received in the sleeve. A separate nozzle body is formed with a nozzle passage having one end communicating with the feed passage at the seat and an opposite end forming a longitudinally generally forwardly open spray mouth, and a face complementary fitted to the outer seat face. A fluid is supplied under pressure to the feed passage so that the fluid exits the spray mouth. The nozzle body is releasably secured by screws or the like to the holder body with the faces engaged tightly together.

    • A roadway milling machine includes a hollow, cylindrically walled, shaft mounted, imperforate drum having tungsten carbide tipped steel cutting tools supported in tool holders extending generally radially outwardly from the cylindrical surface of the drum. The drum is moved over a roadway to be milled, and is rotated on its shaft to bring the cutting tools into operative contact with the roadway. Water is fed into the drum along a water access opening provided along the axis of the drum shaft; and this coolant leaves the drum through openings provided in the cylindrical drum wall, one adjacent to each cutting tool, in position where the coolant leaving the drum will impinge upon and cool its adjacent cutting tool. In order to limit the flow of water from the drum to the cutting tools and, at the same time, to prevent the necessarily small openings from clogging up, large openings can be provided through the cylindrical drum wall and well into the tool holders which extend integrally outwardly from that wall. A transverse opening through each tool holder is open to the tool holder large radial opening in the tool holder. This transverse opening is almost completely fitted with a bolt or other rod-like structure. The minimum cross-sectional area of the bolt is less than that of the transverse slot, and the bolt is free to vibrate or otherwise move under the impetus of the shock to the tool and tool holder as the tool strikes the roadway on each rotation of the drum.

    • A mineral cutting device comprises a plurality of replaceable picks (10, 10A-10G) and associated water conveying lances (20, 20A-20G), each lance being of flexible, tubular synthetic plastics material having a hollow, water-conveying interior and being contained, at least partially, within a bore (13, 13A, 13B) in the pick (10, 10A-10G) when the pick (10, 10A-10G) has been mounted on the device (1, 1A, 1B), to line the bore and prevent water pressure within the lance being effective on the pick, with a terminal end of each lance provided with a metallic nozzle secured in water sealing manner thereto and providing a water discharge orifice (23). The invention further includes a lance (20, 20A-20G) for use with the mineral cutting device defined above, and also a shank bore (13B) formed at least partially in a side (27) of the pick shank (12, 12A-12D), which, in use, is the compressive stress side, and/or with an inner bore end (15) intersected by a slot (42) provided in at least a portion of the shank (12D).
