    • In an automated molding machine for ultra small draft angle slurry molding products, a righting gear of a righting mechanism drives a turning mechanism to perform a turnover action to assist righting an ascending or descending action along a righting rack of a righting shaft synchronously. When a slurry suction die is moved up and down and/or turned over, the slurry suction die can be ascended to a designated position through the righting provided by the righting gear and the righting rack to achieve a precise closing when the slurry suction film is carried, ascended and closed with an extrusion die or descended and closed with a moving mold. Meanwhile, the extrusion die is controlled by a power cylinder to perform a descending stroke and close the mold with the slurry suction die.

    • The invention provides a method for forming a fibrous layer within a tubular support, which comprises the steps of: (a) providing the tubular support; (b) providing forming mesh over the curved surface of the support and closing its ends against escape of fluid; and (c) introducing fibrous slurry (e.g. an aqueous slurry of borosilicate glass microfibers and water dispersible heat curable acrylic resin at a pH of about 3) from a pressurized source into an annular molding space between a rotary molding torpedo and an inner surface of the support, the torpedo having at least one channel for slurry opening along a curved surface thereof, fibers in the slurry collecting within the forming mesh to form the layer. The invention also provides apparatus for forming a fibrous layer within a tubular support, which comprises: (a) a mold having a molding space for the tubular support; (b) forming mesh in the molding space for covering an exterior curved surface of the support, the forming mesh being configured to collect fibers and permit liquid to pass through it; (c) headstock and tailstock end closures for closing headstock and tailstock ends of the support against escape of fluid; (d) a rotary molding torpedo extendible into and retractable from the molding space for defining with an internal curved surface of the support an annular space for formation of the fibrous layer, the torpedo having at least one channel for slurry opening along a curved surface thereof; (e) a drive coupled to the torpedo for rotation thereof during molding; and (f) a supply line for supplying fibrous slurry from a pressurized source to the torpedo for flow into and through the molding space; and (g) suction means for withdrawing fluid from the molding space.

    • Apparatus is for forming fibrous filter elements, e.g tubular elements molded from borosilicate microfibers. It comprises (a) a reservoir 14 for a body of aqueous liquid, said reservoir being provided with a first liquid level sensor; (b) means 12 for supplying make-up water to the reservoir via an inlet valve 140; (c) a mixer for mixing fibers with liquid from the reservoir to form a slurry, the mixer comprising a tank T2 provided with a second liquid level sensor 31a; (d) a holding tank T1 for receiving slurry from the mixer and provided with a third liquid level sensor 41a; (e) at least one molding rig R4 for molding fibrous filter elements from the slurry by separation of the fibers from a major proportion of the aqueous liquid of said slurry; (f) means 71, 77 for supplying slurry from the holding tank Ti under pressure to the or each molding rig; (g) means 83, 91, 92, 93 for returning unused slurry from the or each molding rig to the holding tank; (h) means 104, 106, 108, 110 for returning to the reservoir 14 from the or each molding rig aqueous liquid that separates from the fibers as fibrous elements are molded; and (i) control means 118, 119 arranged to monitor the volume of liquid in said apparatus on the basis of received signals from said liquid level sensors, and if said total is below a target value to open the inlet valve 140 for admission of make-up water to the reservoir. By the use of the above control means, addition of make-up water to the reservoir 14 may be made in small increments and abrupt changes in pH of liquid supplied for mixing fiber slurry in the tanks T2 and T3 can be avoided. pH sensors 28, 30 are immersed in aqueous liquid in mixing tanks T2 and T3, and pH control means 120 122 monitors the pH of the aqueous liquid in mixing tanks, and when said pH is outside a range of target values operating acid or base supply pumps 124-120 to add acid or base to the molding tank to adjust of the pH of the aqueous liquid therein. Dispersion of the fibers to form slurry having a predetermined consistency and free of aggregates is verified in mixing tanks T2 and T3 on the basis of signal from turbidity sensors 144, 146 submerged in the slurry before the slurry is allowed to pass to the holding tanks T1, T4.
