    • A rotatable tool for chip removing machining includes a drill shank, and an exchangeable loose top mounted at an axially front end of the shank. Between these there is a coupling, which includes a male part on the loose top, and a groove in the basic body. By means of a slot, two deflectable legs are defined by the shank, which legs form a jaw for receiving and clamping the male part. The maximal width of the jaw upon deflection of the legs away from one another is larger than the maximal breadth of a wedge portion included in the male part. Furthermore, the angles of inclination of flank surfaces on the male part and side surfaces in the groove, are equally large in order to guarantee surface contact between said surfaces, when the legs are resiliently tightened against the male part. The wedge portion is of dovetail shape, wherein the loose top is drawn axially against the shank as it is being radially clamped by the legs.

    • A chuck that can be operated with or without a key, depending upon the amount of torque desired. The jaws are controlled by rotation of a screw ring about the axis of the chuck body that slides the jaws along jaw passages by engagement with teeth on the jaw surfaces. The screw ring is housed in a tightening knob that has a planar ring gear perpendicular to the chuck body axis. A tail section is rigidly attached to the chuck body below the tightening knob and houses a pinion gear that matingly engages the planar ring gear and rotates in concert with the tightening knob. Insertion of a hex key into a recess in the pinion gear allows the application of additional torque. Alternate embodiments incorporate a idler gear to reverse pinion gear rotation; locate the pinion gear in the tightening knob with the planar ring gear in the tail section; and utilize a planar ring gear on both the tail section and the tightening knob with a floating ring to house the pinion gear between the planar ring gears.

    • A bit attaching arrangement for a power tool has a collet nut threadably engaging a rotatably driven shaft of the power tool. The collet nut has a plurality of slots positioned on an outer peripheral surface. A first gear is disposed on the shaft so that rotation of the first gear causes rotation of the shaft. An actuating member having a second gear associated therewith is attached to the housing of the power tool. The actuating member also has a slot-engaging extension associated therewith. The actuating member is positionable between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the second gear engages the first gear and the extension engages one of the slots of the collet nut such that rotation of the actuating member results in rotation of the shaft while maintaining the collet nut at a generally fixed rotational location. In a second position, the first and second gears do not engage one another and the extension does not engage any of the slots of the collet nut such that the shaft can be freely rotated during operation of the power tool.

    • An accessory is attached to a reversible electric drill-type tool, i.e., a portable electric drill, for facilitating engagement and disengagement of the shank of a drill or other tool element by the drill chuck. For this purpose, the chuck is provided with a recess in a sleeve thereof. The accessory has a locking device selectively movable between a first position disengaged from the recess and a second position engaging the recess. Such element is supported by a collar carried on a front face of a housing of the tool to permit selective movement of the element between the first and second positions. The collar maintains the locking element in fixed angular relationship with respect to the axis of rotation of the chuck. In the first position, the locking element prevents rotation of the chuck sleeve relative to the housing. In this way, operation of the tool turns in one direction or the other provides respective tightening or loosening of the chuck for engagement or disengagement of the shank. In the second position, unencumbered normal rotation of the chuck collar with the chuck is permitted.
