    • Olefinic compounds are converted to oxygenated compounds by treatment with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt carbonylation catalyst, a reaction modifier containing zinc, magnesium, barium, cadmium, strontium, calcium or beryllium, and an activator containing lead, mercury, bismuth, or thallium, the activator being present in an amount of from 0,05 to 10 millimoles per litre of olefinic feed. Suitable cobalt catalysts are, for example, organic or inorganic cobalt salts and metallic cobalt. The preferred modifiers are zinc and magnesium salts and the preferred activators are salts of the specified metals. Suitable salts are, for example, stearates, naphthenates, linoleates, oleates, acetates, butyrates, chlorides and nitrates. The oxides may also be used. Specifications 827,579 and 864,142 also are referred to.ALSO:Olefinic compounds having n carbon atoms in the molecule are converted into oxygenated products having 2n + 2 carbon atoms per molecule by reacting them at elevated temperature and pressure with hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the presence of a cobalt carbonylation catalyst, a reaction modifier containing zinc, magnesium, barium, cadmium, strontium, calcium or beryllium, and an activator containing lead, mercury, bismuth or thallium in a carbonylation zone, the activator being present in an amount from 0.05 to 10 millimoles per litre of olefine feed. The preferred starting materials are olefines having 2-20 carbon atoms. In addition to the products containing 2n + 2 carbon atoms there are substantial amounts of products having n + 1 carbon atoms. The preferred cobalt catalysts are salts of organic acids, e.g. the oleate, stearate or naphthenate. Preferably the catalyst is present in an amount of 0.005-0.2 moles per litre of olefine feed, at a temperature of 200-500 DEG F. and a pressure of 1000-6000 p.s.i.g. If desired the products from the carbonylation step may be subsequently hydrogenated to convert the aldehydes to alcohols. Specifications 827,579 and 864,142 also are referred to.
