    • A grinder (30) has a toolessly attached ingredient hopper assembly (50) overlying a toolessly attached fixed grinding burr (134) defining the top of a grind chamber (158) within which is received a mating rotary grinding burr (150) that is slidably mounted to a rotary drive motor (154) for adjustment relative to the fixed grinding burr (134). Adjustment is achieved automatically by control of a stepper motor (168) that pushes on the end of an elongate member (151) passing through a hollow rotary drive axle (152) and carrying the rotary grinding burr (150) at an opposite end. Start of a grinding cycle in response to actuation of a start switch is inhibited if a pair of photosensors (81, 82) do not detect location of a ground ingredient container (68) in a correct position for receipt of the ground food ingredient, if an automatically closable hopper cover lid (57) is not in a closed position or if grinding parameters, such as the fineness of the grind and the amount of ingredient to be ground has not been detected.

    • Disclosed is a grinder which includes a grinder assembly retained in a housing. The grinder assembly receives material for grinding such as coffee beans. Grinding burrs are provided, one of which is rotated by a grinder drive motor of the grinder assembly. The other of the burrs is generally non-rotatable with regard to the general grinding operation. The two grinding burrs are provided with grinding surfaces against which beans are ground. The grinding surfaces are spaced a desired dimension away from each other to produce a desired grind of coffee. An apparatus, system and method is disclosed for adjusting at least the generally non-rotatable burr to maintain, calibrate or otherwise adjust the dimension or gap between the grinding surfaces of the burrs.

Pivoting the lever toward the other direction will produce fine coffee powder.

    • A grain mill includes upper and lower supports defining a chamber. An upper mill stone is disposed in the chamber and affixed to the upper support. A lower mill stone is disposed in the chamber beneath the upper mill stone and is driven about a vertical axis of rotation. The upper support cannot rotate relative to the lower support, but can move vertically relative thereto to adjust a grinding gap between the mill stones. Adjustment of the upper support is achieved by a rotatable adjusting ring having right and left-handed screw threads which engage respective threads of the upper and lower supports. The upper support comprises a cover member which carries the upper mill stone and a cover ring which is threadedly connected to the adjustment ring. The cover member is removable from the cover ring while the cover ring remains attached to the adjustment ring.

    • A coffee mill is incorporated in a coffee-making machine. At least one horizontal grinding unit has a casing provided with a lateral outlet which opens into a vertical discharge nozzle. The lateral outlet is located opposite to a centrifugal turbine which projects coffee powder through the lateral outlet. Provision is made opposite to lateral outlet for a vertical discharge nozzle, the bottom orifice of which opens directly above the location of a brewing receptacle and the upper portion of which has a lateral inlet ear placed opposite to the lateral outlet of the grinding unit. The discharge nozzle is provided with a deflecting inner wall which is capable of downwardly directing the coffee powder delivered by the grinding unit. The discharge nozzle is also removably mounted and may thus be readily cleaned.

    • A grinder refinement mechanism for use with a conventional coffee or peanut grinder is disclosed. The grinder includes the usual screw conveyor having a rotary grinding burr attached to a forward end thereof, a stationary grinding burr connected to a wall of the grinder housing and a main spring which biases the screw conveyor toward the forward end of the grinder housing against an adjustment screw projecting through an end wall. The mechanism includes a lever arm pivotally attached to an outside surface of the end wall and an electrical solenoid connected to the arm. The usual adjustment screw is replaced with a plunger element which slidably projects both into and out of the end wall and is confined between a forward end of the screw conveyor and the arm. In one condition of the solenoid, the main spring forces the screw conveyor and plunger forwardly to hold the arm against a stop screw which thus determines the desired coarse grinding condition of the grinder burrs. In the other condition of the solenoid, the arm is drawn off the stop screw to force the plunger and screw conveyor rearwardly in opposition to the main spring to a fine grinding condition of the grinder burrs. The coarse and fine grinding conditions of the grinder burrs can be precisely adjusted by the stop screw and a screw mounted on the arm which bears on the plunger. Additional solenoids may be employed in different arrangements to obtain more than two grinding conditions such as coarse, intermediate and fine grinding conditions. A relief spring connected between each of the solenoids and the arm permit the arm to flex momentarily when the grinder encounters binding or jamming to relieve such conditions.
