    • Systems and methods for an upgradeable and/or reconfigurable receiver are provided. In general, the present invention is directed to providing systems and methods for designing an electronic communication system having easy and cost effective upgradeable receiver systems and components including, for example, an amplifier and/or a filter. For example, a receiver may include a receiver front end that is configured so that at least one of the original conventional system components may be used along with one or more new system components to provide greater receiver sensitivity and/or selectivity. In various embodiments, portions of an upgradeable receiver system may be made as modular components that allow easy replacement for the upgradeable components which may include a signal amplifier and/or a signal filter. In various embodiments the receiver may be upgraded by replacing a conventional low noise amplifier (LNA) with a high temperature superconductor (HTS) filter and/or a cryo-cooled LNA.

    • A HTS-based RF receiver includes a cryocooler and a cryogenic enclosure in thermal communication with the cryocooler. The cryogenic enclosure contains a HTS filter and a LNA therein. A first MEMS bypass switch is positioned between a RF input and the HTS filter, the first MEMS bypass switch operatively coupling the RF input to the HTS filter. A second MEMS bypass switch is positioned between the LNA and RF output, the second MEMS bypass switch operatively coupling the LNA to the RF output. A bypass pathway located within the cryogenic enclosure is connected between the first and second MEMS switches to bypass the HTS filter and LNA when an operating parameter of the RF receiver falls outside a pre-determined range.

    • Novel structures and methods for forming useful high temperature superconducting devices, most particularly resonators, are provided. Structures resulting in reduced peak current densities relative to known structures achieve numerous desirable benefits, especially including the reduced intermodulation effects of earlier resonators. In one aspect of this invention, a spiral in, spiral out resonator is provided, characterized in that it has an odd number of long runs, at least equal to five long runs, where the long runs are connected by turns, and wherein there are at least two sequential turns of the same handedness, followed by at least two turns of the opposite handedness. In yet another aspect of this invention, it has been discovered that reducing the size of the input and output pads of HTS resonators increases the relative inductance compared to the capacitance. Yet another resonator structure is a spiral snake resonator having a terminal end disposed within the resonator. A wide in the middle structure and wide at peak current density resonator structures utilize enlarged width portions of the resonator in those areas where current density is largest. In yet another aspect of this invention, operation of resonators in high modes, above the fumdamental mode, reduce peak current densities. Resonators operated in modes in which current in adjacent long runs are in the same direction further serve to reduce current densities, and intermodulation effects. Symmetric current structures and modes of operation are particularly advantageous where far field effects are compensated for.

    • Multi-stage electric filters with improved intermodulation-distortion characteristics and a method for designing such electric filters is provided. In general, the invention may include a multi-resonator electric filter in which one or more of the resonators have been intentionally designed to have a different IP and/or Q than the other resonators in the electric filter. In one case, the electric filters include a 4-resonator Chebyshev narrow pass-band filter with at least the first resonator having a Q and/or IP different from at least one other resonator in the filter. The filter thereby has improved IMD power over conventional designed filters while maintaining high Q. In a preferred embodiment the filter may include a superconducting material. The relative Q and IP of the respective resonators in the improved filter may depend on the relative strength of in-band and out-of-band signals. The performance and cost of the electric filter may be optimized by designing the filter to have a relative Q and IP required by the particular application.
