    • At least part of the support (3) for an embolic protection filter is of a multifilament wire construction. The support (3) comprises Nitinol wires (21) wound in a spiral around a single radiopaque wire (22), the radiopaque wire (22) being located substantially along the axis of bending of the support (3). During bending of the support (3), for example upon movement of the support (3) to the expanded configuration, each wire (21, 22) bends independently of the other wires. As a result, the force required to bend the multifilament support (3) is minimised, and thus the filter (1) achieves enhanced trackability during transport through a tortuous vasculature, such as in coronary applications. Because the Nitinol wires (21) are wound in a spiral around the radiopaque wire (22), this configuration acts to decrease the bending stresses induced in each wire (21, 22) upon bending. The radiopaque wire (22) provides visualisation for a clinician during transport of the filter (1) through a vasculature and deployment of the filter (1) in the vasculature. Because the radiopaque wire (22) is located along the neutral axis of the support (3), the forces required to plastically deform the radiopaque wire (22) as the support (3) moves from the collapsed configuration to the expanded configuration, upon deployment of the filter (1), are minimised. In this way the dampening effect of the radiopaque material is minimised.

    • An embolic protection system 1 comprises a guidewire 99 for advancing through a vasculature, the guidewire 99 having a distal end and a proximal end; an embolic protection filter 1 having a filter body 41 with a distal end and a proximal end, the filter body 41 providing for a collapsed configuration and an expanded deployed configuration. The embolic protection filter body 41 has a guidewire path for slidably receiving the guidewire 99 to permit movement of the filter 1 relative to the guidewire 99 when the filter 1 is in the collapsed configuration and the expanded deployed configuration. A delivery catheter 2 is advanceable over the guidewire 99 for delivery of the embolic protection filter 1; the delivery catheter 2 having a a proximal end and a distal end. The filter 1 is deployed from the distal end of the delivery catheter 2 into the expanded deployed configuration. A retrieval catheter 3 is also advancable over the guidewire 99 for retrieval of the filter 1, the retrieval catheter 3 having a distal end and a proximal end; and engagement elements for engaging the embolic protection filter 1 with the guidewire 99 for retrieval of the filter 1 into the retrieval catheter 3 in the collapsed configuration.

    • A collapsible filter element for a transcatheter embolic protection device, the filter element comprises a collapsible filter body of polymeric material which is movable between a collapsed stored position for movement through a vascular system and an expanded position for extension across a blood vessel such that blood passing through the blood vessel is delivered through the filer element. A proximal inlet portion of the filter body has one or more inlet openings sized to allow blood and embolic material enter the filter body. A distal outlet portion of the filter body has a plurality of generally circular outlet openings sized to allow through-passage of blood, but to retain embolic material within the filter body. The distal outlet portion of the filter body in the region of the outlet openings has means for reducing shear stress on blood passing through the outlet openings. The shear stress reducing means includes lead-in and lead-out radiussed portions of the filter body leading to the outlet holes. The porosity of the distal portion of the filter body decreases towards the distal end. A blind portion extends for at least 5% of the length of the body. Preferably there are between 200 and 300 outlet opening with an average diameter of approximately 150 microns.
