    • A printing apparatus which performs printing using a printhead having plural printing elements. Print data corresponding to a defective nozzle is added to print data corresponding to an adjacent normal nozzle, then the print data corresponding to the defective nozzle is masked, and printing is performed based on the print data corresponding to the normal nozzle as a result of addition and the masked print data corresponding to the defective nozzle. An image printing operation is performed by preferably 1-path printing. Further, preferably, the print data corresponding to the defective nozzle is sequentially distributed between data corresponding to two adjacent normal nozzles. Otherwise, on/off states of the data corresponding to the two adjacent normal nozzles are detected then the print data corresponding to the defective nozzle is distributed based on the result of detection.

    • An ink jet recording apparatus provides a plurality of recording heads arranged in a scanning direction, each having a plurality of nozzles arranged substantially perpendicular to the scanning direction, and records by discharging ink from the nozzles onto a recording medium by application of drive signals. The apparatus divides the plurality of nozzles among a plurality of blocks having a predetermined number of nozzles and sequentially drives each block so as to discharge ink within a discharge cycle. The apparatus has a column counter for counting a number of nozzles driven in a discharging cycle in each recording head, and a block counter for counting a number of nozzles driven in each block, and determines a pulsewidth of a heat signal for each recording head by a heat timing controller, based upon count values counted by the column counter and block counter.

    • In a correction processing that corrects a color deviation caused by output characteristic variations among print heads of a printing apparatus, the printing apparatus prints a test pattern that allows accurate detection of the color deviation by a visual check. More specifically, each of the patches in the test pattern is made up of two areas placed adjacent to each other. One of the two areas (upper area) is used as a test area for detecting the degree of the color deviation. Of the gradation values of C, M and Y, which make up the patch print data, the gradation values of C and M are changed among the patches making up the test pattern. The other area is used as a reference area printed with an achromatic color that represents a reference gradation value for the deviation detection. The gradation values of C, M, Y and K are determined so that a spatial frequency of dots formed in the reference area of each patch is close to the spatial frequency of the associated test area.

    • A printing apparatus and print control method, capable of using plural types of printheads, can achieve high throughput by performing optimized print control in accordance with the type of printhead and the number of printheads used. In a case where the printing apparatus adopting such print control method includes, e.g., four printheads, and performs printing on a print medium by reciprocally scanning the printheads, detection is first performed as to whether only one printhead which discharges black ink is mounted or four printheads which respectively discharge black, yellow, cyan and magenta ink are mounted; decision is made on a printing period of the printhead based on the detected result; then decision is made on a scanning speed of the printhead based on the decided printing period; and the printhead is driven based on the decided printing period and scanning speed to perform printing.
