    • In one embodiment of the invention, a utility may be installed (e.g., by a system administrator) on a storage system. The utility may read content units on the storage system that are stored in one data format, and convert the content units to a second data format. In one embodiment, in response to a read request for a content unit, a data format in which to return the content unit may be selected and the content unit may be returned in that data format. In another embodiment, mapping information may be created that specifies in which data format a content unit should be returned in response to a request for the content unit. The mapping information may be stored either on the storage system that stores the content unit, the computer requesting access to the content unit, or any other computer or device in the computer system.

    • A system, method and program product for processing a stream of data events using hybrid histograms. A system is provided that includes: a hybrid histogram that provides a running statistical summary of the stream of data events, wherein the hybrid histogram includes a plurality of percentile ranges, a set of boundary values that separate the percentile ranges, and a count associated with each of the percentile ranges; a histogram processing system for identifying a percentile range from the plurality of percentile ranges into which a new data event value falls, and for incrementing the count associated with the identified percentile range; a periodic boundary recalculation system for periodically recalculating the boundary values such that each percentile range includes a substantially similar number of associated counts; and an analysis system that analyzes the hybrid histogram.

    • One embodiment is directed to a computer system that includes primary and secondary storage systems. When a request to store a content unit is received, it may be determined whether to store the content unit on the primary storage system or the secondary storage system. In another embodiment, a computer may store information relating to an action to be performed in one of the directories of a file system that corresponds to a period of time. When the period of time to which the directory corresponds arrives, the action may be performed. In another embodiment, a content unit stored on a primary storage system may be copied to a secondary storage system in a computer system. After the content unit has been copied, the secondary storage system may send a delete request to the primary storage system to delete the content unit from the primary storage system.

    • Embodiments of the present invention are directed to a method and apparatus for receiving an input/output (I/O) request from a host computer that specifies an operation to be performed on a content addressable storage (CAS) system and determining which operation is specified by the request before receipt of the I/O request by a content addressable storage system. In another embodiment, an I/O request from a host computer is received by a first CAS which determines if the request is to be processed by another CAS system. When it is determined that the request is to be processed by another CAS system, the first CAS system may forward the request to the other CAS system. In another embodiment, an appliance receives an I/O request from a host computer to perform an operation that accesses a unit of content. The appliance may set up a communication session between the host and a CAS system so that the unit of content may be transmitted between the host and the CAS system without passing through the appliance.
