    • Techniques are provided that allow power control and/or hand off operations to be performed in a wireless network in a manner that can enhance overall network throughput. In at least one embodiment, signal to noise ratio (SNR) and a signal to interference ratio (SIR) are obtained for a first mobile device within a wireless network. The SNR and SIR are then used to perform power control in the network (e.g., for the first mobile device). The SNR and SIR may also be used to facilitate hand off operations. In one approach, it may be determined whether the SNR and the SIR are each high or low, based on comparison with predetermined threshold values, in order to make a power control decision.

    • Disclosed is a system and method for transmitting data from a first base station to a first destination subscriber station (DSS). The first base station is capable of transmitting data directly to the first DSS through a direct route. Co-channel interference is present at neighboring cells during the transmission of the data through the direct route. The method includes selecting a relay station from a plurality of relay stations for transmitting data to the first DSS via a relay route. The relay route includes a route from the first base station to the relay station and further from the relay station to the first DSS. A height of the relay station is lower than a height of the first base station. Further, the method includes transmitting the data through the relay route when a throughput of the relay route is greater than a throughput of the direct route by a predetermined threshold.

    • In some embodiments a beamforming method is disclosed. The method can include transmitting a beam having a channel defined by a maximum ration transmission vector (MRT) and receiving a first response from a receiver, where the first response has first information such as parameters related to the transmitted beam. Using the parameters and the initial MRT another directional transmission can be made. A similar process can determine a maximum combining ratio for a receiver. Set up communications between the transmitter and the receiver can be reduced by omitting data from transmission that can be acquired by other means such as from memory or calculations. Additional embodiments are also disclosed.

    • Embodiments of a transmitter and methods for puncturing bits are generally described herein. Other embodiments may be described and claimed. In some embodiments, a multicarrier transmitter performs bit puncturing for pilot subcarriers in two operations. The first operation may uniformly removes bits from an encoded bit stream to achieve a predetermined code rate reserving space for pilot subcarriers of a predetermined number of antennas. The second operation may remove bits from each spatial data stream after interleaving in a manner to achieve approximately equal spacing between the punctured bits before interleaving. In this way, a conventional interleaver may be used. The second operation reserves space for pilot subcarriers when a greater number of antennas than the predetermined number are used.
