The surgical fasteners may be configured for use in combination with a surgical fastener applying apparatus. In one version, the surgical fastener is a surgical staple including a pair of legs, a crown interconnecting the pair of legs, and a material including an initiator coating at least a portion of the legs and/or crown. Adhesive may be delivered into contact with the initiator associated with the surgical fasteners such that a desirable size, shape, and configuration of activated or polymerized adhesive is created.

摘要： Expanding or foaming adhesives are used to reduce the stomach volume to reduce the caloric intake and weight of a patient. A web structure is attached inside the stomach and an expanding or foaming adhesive is applied to the web structure. The expanding or foaming adhesive attaches to the web structure and to the stomach to partition the stomach. The partition barrier divides the stomach volume into a reduced volume available for food storage and an empty volume that the food cannot enter. The reduced volume enables the patient to feel full faster and reduce caloric intake. A passageway can be provided between the two volumes near the base of the stomach to allow food or fluids to exit from the empty volume.

摘要： A two piece anastomosis device for attaching two organs together and creating a passage between the organs is disclosed. The anastomosis device has a first tissue clamping ring and a second tissue clamping ring that are brought together to clamp tissue therebetween and cut off the flow of blood to the tissue. The tissue clamping rings are locked together with an adhesive, and over time, causes the clamped tissue to necrose and slough off. The sloughed tissue creates a passageway through the anastomosis device. A method of using the fastener to create a bypass passageway between the stomach and small intestine is disclosed.

The machine includes at least one movable element mounted for movement on a path and at least one programmable controller. The machine further includes at least two absolute or magnetostrictive sensors or the machine includes an absolute sensor and a non-absolute sensor. The programmable controller uses positional information from the sensors to determine the position of the movable elements on the path and control the movable elements. The method includes determining a known position for the movable elements, linking at least two magnetostrictive sensors into one virtual sensor, and/or performing commutation alignment for the movable elements. Determining the position and commutation alignment can occur when the movable elements are stationary or moving.

摘要： A surgical stapler is provided which is insertable through an endoscopic tube to enable a surgeon to staple a hernia patch to tissue inside a body cavity. The endoscopic surgical stapler includes a staple cartridge pivotally mounted on the distal end of a support tube extending from a handle provided with an actuator mechanism for actuating a staple forming mechanism inside the staple cartridge to fasten staples to the tissue. The staple cartridge is adjustable to different angular orientations relative to the support tube. The staple actuator mechanism is operable to actuate the staple cartridge in any of the angular orientations. The support shaft is rotatable about its longitudinal axis relative to the handle to adjust the rotational orientation of the support shaft and the staple cartridge. The staple cartridge is rotatable about its longitudinal axis relative to the support shaft to adjust the rotational position of the staple cartridge relative to the support shaft. Separate actuator mechanisms are provided on the handle to control the pivotal movement of the staple cartridge, the rotation of the support shaft, and the rotation of the staple cartridge relative to the support shaft.

The stapler has a retractable cartridge where the cartridge is retractable from a staple-forming position in which the distal-most staple in the cartridge is aligned with a driver blade on a staple driver for forming the staple against an anvil. An elongated shaft communicates with the anvil and driver, and means exist for forming the staple from the proximal end of the shaft, and for sequentially advancing each staple in the cartridge to the distal end of the cartridge. The retractable nature of the cartridge creates the ability to provide the stapler with a flat, low-profile, by eliminating the conventional stacked configuration of the anvil, driver, and staple cartridge. The stapler may be inserted through a small diameter opening frequently found during minimally invasive endoscopic surgical procedures, and then manipulated to sequentially form numerous staples against the anvil, one staple at a time, until the desired number of staples are fired.
